I read through the rules and saw "Line of Communications" refereneced but not defined. What is this? Where is it defined? Thanks

Lines of communications are largely used for retreats (ie. you must retreat towards your line of communication) ... see section 9.8.6 and 9.8.7 for more details.

As for searches ... its easiest to view the file electronically and then search through it ... you can view the rules here:

LOCs are printed on the map and identified in the Exclusive Rules for each game. They aren't "lines" per se, but rather serve as the terminus or objective for units which are retreating.
