Anyone have any recommendations for games that 8-9 (or more) people can play?

Thanks.

Wits and Wagers is a great one, especially if the group is just getting to know each other. The game is short so other social activities can happen in between games. We play this when we have folks over for game night as a filler during dinner/drinks.

With that number I recommend breaking up the group into 2-3 games.

Unless you're willing to play Werewolf (or your preferred iteration thereof), Arkham Horror, or perhaps Bang, your options are VERY limited with that number of players.

If you use the advanced search you can set the number of players then sort the list by rank to get a good idea of what is available.

Yeah, I was thinking of splitting up.

I have like, 8-9 people coming over, it kinda happened fast (like, last night, haha), so I don't really have any planning.

I was thinking maybe a catan and a small world, but I thought we should have something light that maybe we could all play together.

I might pick up Wits and Wagers so we have at least 1 game we can all play together.

The other games I have are Power Grid and Puerto Rico, which both seem a little long/rules heavy to play in two small groups. I also have Quelf, but if you have more then 5 people I feel like that game drags on forever.

Any ideas/suggestions? I haven't played Wits and Wagers, although I feel that if I got it I would play it occasionally when there's a party.

Unnamed Object plays 8 and you could improvise to 9 without breaking the game. Ditto Liar's Dice for which you just need 5 dice and a large dice cup per person.

Most medium or heavy games are going to add time as you add players, and you'll soon be drowning in downtime. If you want to go beyond the very light, you're better off breaking up the group and playing 2 or 3 games instead of one big one.

Here are some lighter games that I enjoy with a big group from time to time:
Taboo
Werewolf
Pit
The Three Things Game

Saboteur - I've played it with 8, but it handles up to 10 players.

And, Unnamed Object plays up to 8 players

Citadels can play up to 8 I think, with the expansion. Otherwise, the prior suggestions seem to be extent of it, as far as I can tell.

This is the perfect number for Eat Poop You Cat AKA Paper Telephone; The Sentence Game; Telephone Pictionary; Picture Consequences.

You just need 8-9 pens/pencils and some paper. It's great fun - I highly recommend giving it a try.

I would cancel Citadels -- the role selection process makes for a lot of downtime. I like it with 3. Eight seems like it would be PAINFUL.

With experienced players it's not bad.

Apples to Apples - people seem to love or hate this game... I think it's pretty fun for large groups, especially if you know each other.

Yeah, I play telephone pictionary all the time. But last time we got together (2 weeks ago) we played that 3 times, so I kinda wanted to avoid it this time.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

Citadels plays up to 8, but as has already been mentioned, can suffer badly from downtime with inexperienced players. I introduced it to my group on night and it was loved by most. However, what should be a card game lasting up to an hour max turned into a 2 and a half hour marathon!!

BANG! can play upto eight if you buy the BANG! Dodge City expansion. The only problem with this game is that people can get knocked out fast (even before their first turn). Therefore, players might get left with nothing to do. I'd suggest having another game on standby that people can start as they get knocked out.

Finally, Arkham Horror can take up to 8 player. Awesome game, but it's going to take a lengthy time to play (read 2-3 hours) and is quite rule/component heavy. Very, very fun though! Also, plenty of expansions to bulk it out.

How about Time's Up?

In my opinion, it edges out Wits & Wagers and Say Anything for best large group party game.

It's best with an even number of players, but you can adapt the rules for an odd number. (I like having one team of three, and they rotate their turns giving clues.)

If you don't have the game, you could make a copy of it yourself with a timer (30 seconds works well) and some index cards. At the start, have everyone write down 5 people (or whatever category you choose) on cards. Duplicates can be discarded during the first round and replaced between the first and second.

It's a blast to play. So much laughter

Cheers,
PP

The Resistance is a new free PnP that seems to have some supporters on BGG, and it supports 8-9 players. Print out a 2-page PDF and you have all you need! Or, you can just play with a deck of standard playing cards.

Werewolf is perfect if you get over 9 or 10

I wish I had that many people together more often, just for that very reason

Tsuro plays up to 8. You could always play multiple games and have the first one out sit out of the second game and allow the other in their place.

Games that we enjoy playing with 8:

Formula D
Cash 'n Guns with Yakuza expansion (especially for casual gamers)
Say Anything (also good with a casual group)
The Great Dalmuti (with social rules in effect)
Incan Gold
Long Shot (new--but we had a lot of fun with it)
PitchCar
TurfMaster

Games that we do NOT enjoy playing with 8:
Twilight: The Board Game
