After playing Combat Commander: Europe three times this week I had the option to play with an OOB containing my favorite weapon. The Flamethrower. There may be more useful and easier weapons to bring to bear on the game battlefield but man o man I really love those flame-spewing suckers.

Of all the different weapons I have gotten to use in tactical gaming the Flamethrower (followed closely by the satchel charge) is my favorite. I love the look on my opponents face as I get ready to roll the dice on that baby to cleanse his MG nest with purifying flame.

What are your favorite game weapons and why?

Third from the left in the bottom row in this counter sheet from The Wreck of the B.S.M. Pandora we find the Turbolaser, also featured in the sequel Voyage of the B.S.M. Pandora.

Turbolaser.

It just sounds cool--

My first serious wargame, way back in the '70s was Starship Troopers. My favorite weapon back then was the portable nuclear missiles carried by the Terran Mech Infantry.

These days, my favorite weapon is the Hellfire Missile fired by the Apache helicopters in World at War: Blood and Bridges. Just park your helos behind a hill well out of range of the Soviet AA weapons then do a pop-up attack. You can take out a company of Soviet AFVs before they can unload infantry with surface to air missiles, at which time you move out of range again. They are so deadly that they're the only NATO units with only one activation per turn to keep the scenarios balanced.

I like ATRs in ASL, no idea why cos they basically suck, but I like the idea of a guy running around with a huge ass gun hunting tanks

Nope, I'd still go with the flamethrower

In the wonderful game, Bonaparte at Marengo, this is how to get nasty Frenchies out of a village.

I lately find myself partial to the Trobrin command cruiser. Long weapon loading times, but oh what firepower.

Romulan Plasma-R torpedo. Takes a while to get going (three turns) but everyone runs from them. Hydran fusion beams are nice too, broken, even.

War elephants! They are cute beasts, have their own trumpets and are the tanks of antiquity. They also are notoriously uncontrollable. In many games you must roll the dice to find out if they attack the enemy or go on the rampage against your own troops. What fun!

The only way to make this games table any cooler would be to add about three flamethrowers.

Intimidating Dialogue:

"Are you sure you want to do that?"

"Man, that's crazy!"

"You watch, I am going to a roll a 1 and blow that position away!"

"snicker, snicker"

ASL - Sherman Firefly, although the flamethrowing OT-34 is pretty awesome too.
SFB - "Revenge" my Klingon D7C which made it all the way through a long campaign game back in the day.

SFB: An insane number of Hydran Stinger-2 fighters.... Though if you're going to count a ship as a weapon... Federation DD.

In ASL, 60mm MTR. Portable, high ROF, almost decent FP, readily available.

Mine would probably be the Genie air-to-air missile. I first discovered it with my copy of Flight Leader. It frightens me that enough people thought that it was a good enough of an idea a) to make them, and b) to have kept around them until the 1980's!!!

A piece I'd actually use in a game? An Ogre Mk. VI.

The simple cavalry saber. If you are able to bring it to bear on enemy infantry, than things are going well. If you are on the receiving end of the chop, things have gone drastically wrong!
