I'm looking for a rule clarification. How many other world encounters/turns should an investigator have both when they enter a gate by choice and when they are delayed?

The way we have been playing according to our interpretation of AH rules:

movement phase - investigator moves to the gate
Arkham encounters phase - investigator is drawn through the gate to the other world
other world encounters phase - investigator has and encounter

This means and investigator would have 2 (3 if delayed) other world encounters. This contradicts the Q&A from the Dunwich Horror rulebook:

"If the investigator was not delayed by a gate opening up in his location, he would be able to get through the Other World having only one other world encounter rather than two."

You read it right the first time. Typical is 2 turns. When you are dleayed because of an encounter it is usually 3 turns.

The reason you are delayed when gates open on you during Phase 5 (and subsequently in Phase 3 as a result) is because you would then only have 1 encounter in the OW. It is this that the DH FAQ is referring - a hypothetical situation. If you were not delayed, it would work like this.

Turn A, Phase 5 - Gate opens, you immediately move to the Space 1 of the OW.
Turn B, Phase 2, Move from Space 1 to Space 2 in the OW.
Turn B, Phase 4, Have your first encounter in Space 2
Turn C, phase 2, move back to Arkham.

In this situation, you skated through the OW in 1 turn. So they force you to delay when a gate opens on you so you get back to the typical 2 turns in the OW.

But that has the added penalty of making you go through 3 turns if you are surpriosed and delayed as a result of a Phase 3 Arkham Encounter gate opening.

Strictly speaking, that probably should read, "If the investigator were not delayed by a gate..." (past subjunctive) but I'm not sure if that would have made it more clear.

The Q&A is explaining why investigators are delayed by a gate opening on their location in the Mythos phase, by saying what would happen if that WEREN'T the case.

My "best" is 5 OW encounters to get back to Arkham (entering was even a normal one, not via "a gate and a monster appears", so wasn't delayed starting off) blush .
