As I opened my copy of RvI yesterday, and started sorting (and sleeving) components, I also glanced through the rule book. I read about the different cards, the counters, blah blah blah. Then I got to the description of the cubes.

If you're wondering, guys...these cubes:

are purple, red, and LIGHT RED.

Not pink. Don't come up in my manly man game of galactic conquest with no pink cubes, you hear? Those are LIGHT RED. It says so, right in the rule book.

Yeah, cute, but not worth buying the whole expansion.

The expansion is worth it for the cards. These components turn out to be superfluous.

Overheard from a guy in pink combat armour:

"It's not pink! It's lightish red."

Hee hee hee, I love you, Red vs. Blue!

That's it! I knew it was reminiscent of something, but couldn't come up with it.

If you're looking for manly colour names check out Games Workshops Citatel Paints for Miniatures

Those colours obviously are:
Blood Red
Warlock Purple
Tentacle Pink (which seems to be no more availiable, but I still got one of those standing around here).

But my favorite colour name will stay "Snakebyte Leather" (just next to "Snot Green" gulp )

We probably play 90% of our games without these, but every once in a while there is an epic power struggle where it suddenly becomes very useful to track everyone's military (or at least those involved. I'm usually happily chugging along with my developments and production worlds). Because ultimately, if you have a takeover power, you have to consider settle every turn. If you can take something, you probably should take it. And it becomes tedious for people add up their military at the start of every round just to see if a takeover is potentially possible.

So yeah, the cubes are definitely useful. They just aren't necessary most of the time.

By the way, pink is totally manly. And way better than purple.
