Today is the first anniversary of my registering on the Geek. An awful lot seems to have happened since then. I feel like I have made dozens of new friends even though I have only met a few of them in person.

It really is a global community and I am so glad to be a very small part of it.

Cool, tell us more. How'd you happen upon the site, and are you completely obsessed now like the rest of us?

Congrats John. I love it when people find a place where they feel at home.

On the net this can be a rare thing. Glad to have you.

Orlando

I used to play a lot of boardgames way before BGG, but in the early 90's I got out of the habit and started playing Video Games most of the time. For my Birthday in May last year, my mother gave me some money. Rather than buy another video game I thought I would get a board game. I went to Playin' Games in London and realised I hardly knew any of the games they sold.

I had a good look through them. I noticed there seemed to be a lot of Ticket to Ride games. As Ticket to Ride had spawned so many spin-offs I thought it must be a good game, so eventually settled for Ticket to Ride Europe, as it seemed to be an update of the original game.

I loved it, it was great fun. So a couple of weeks later I went back for more. I bought two games this time with mixed results. Thurn and Taxis, which I do like and Candimir the first settlement of Catan which was at best OK. Settlers was one of the few games I did buy in the 90's, so I was keen to get more games in that series. Unfortunately most of them proved to be not that good.

As I was disappointed with Candimir, I thought I would look to see if there were any web sites that reviewed board games. I found the geek and have been a regular ever since.

And like most people who use the geek, I now find I spend more time reading about games than actually playing them.

I didn't expect that this theory would ever result in someone actually buying a good game..

If you look at them there are a lot of older games I already had, at least half.
