Once again we find ourselves staring into the gritty maw of yet another work week. Toiling away while feeding out souls into the wood chipper of despair. So, do we let the man keep us down?! No! we talk about all the good times we had gaming over the last weekend.

Friday started off hopeful, with my sister in law wanting to game after work, so I swung by our house and grabbed a armload of our favorites and headed over. We have been working on introducing her and her husband to "good" board games, and now that we have them firmly addicted to Bohnanza, I wanted to bring over a few new ones. Being typical women, neither her nor my wife wanted to pick a game to start with, so I choose Catan. I feel that I have years of gaming to make up for, since I didn't pick this up back around 2002 or so, delaying my descent into the madness we know as board gaming. Once again it was a blast to play (My wife really likes the idea of the wooden resource tokens, so I need to pick some of them up to use instead of the cards). I ended up being the first to ten, beating my sister in law by about 1 turn.

Next we taught her *something* for some reason neither my wife nor I can remember what the heck we played in the middle. I blame it on the 6 kids ages 9mo -6 all wanting to eat the last half of the game. I think we have blocked this trauma from our memory.

Then after getting some pizza and getting the kids to chill out, we decided to finish up with Stone Age, one of my wife's favorites. The sister in law picked up on this one really fast, and was blocking like a pro. She and my wife horded the heck out of the huts and cards. I ended up winning, but just by a very small margin (13 points). I need to pick up more resource tokens for this game as well, as we usually end up running low on gold and stone towards the end and flipping them on end to represent various amounts so we can use some extras.

Sadly though, Saturday and Sunday ended up being a complete wash. After the hopeful night Friday, and with nothing really planned for the weekend, I was really looking forward to getting some good gaming in. But sadly it didn't happen, though I did watch Zathura with my son Sunday evening, while my wife was off helping her sister. So that's the closest I got to gaming the rest of the weekend. Now I need to watch Jumanji with him!

Now it is your turn, give to me your mini-session reports and tales of gaming recently past. What did you play this weekend???

Saturday was a combination of old and new (for me).

Played a game of Pandemic with the wife which we lost at due to Black expanding very rapidly and too many outbreaks occurring.

Then we went on to play Jambo for the first time. I enjoyed it and so did she. We never got any of the small markets come up until the very end of the game so it was tight and she ended up beating me rather badly.

On Sunday I played Fluxx with my son at the local coffee shop, our weekend routine. It's usually this or Kung Fu Fighting that he selects.

I'm still trying to find time to do a few solo plays of Arkham Horror one of these nights. Perhaps this week is the one!

Blockus! the other game was Blockus, I chose it because she loves tetris, and I feel my wife unjustly hates this game, so I was hoping a couple plays with her sister would help.
We played it twice, I won the first time, my wife won the second game.

Friday night - Summer Swim League meet until well after nine...

Saturday - Sounders FC vs. Chelsea (Probably should have eaten breakfast first gulp ). Largest crowd to ever watch a soccer game in Seattle, and 4th largest crowd in Qwest field history, or something like that.

Saturday night - zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Sunday! - Made my kids play my newest Steel Driver. Got hosed in the endgame, trashing my black train co. Eldest daughter edged me out. Interesting little game. Later my son and I played Khet: The Laser Game. I didn't see something and PEW PEW PEW. So then I got Ploy down, put down my Tricorder, and owned his face in that one. Ended up the night with a 2 board, three checkpoint game of RoboRally. Three of us blew each other to pieces, and my son ran away with the win.

...and I are both going to see Chelsea v. Inter tomorrow at the Rose Bowl. I'm really looking forward to it.

Then I get to see L.A. Galaxy v. Barcelona on Aug. 1. cool

I try to catch the matches out here in L.A. when a quality team pays us a visit. The last match I went to was Manchester United v. Club America, back in 2003.

Sadly, I ran out of money before I could get tickets for the Galaxy/AC Milan match last night.

Sadly, only one game of Pandemic. Between kids who wouldn't go down for their afternoon naps and a little time as shade tree mechanic on a sick vehicle, we had a hard time getting anything in on Sunday. Fortunately, my weekends are Sunday/Monday, so there's still hope.

After 15 or more plays of Pandemic, we have won only one game on Normal difficulty. We're playing it right, probably just not smart.

Anyway, we had red eradicated early in the game, but couldn't stop four hotspots (Baghdad, Khartoum, Mexico City, London) from outbreaking repeatedly. We cured blue, but that took so much time that the outreak counter was 7 and we had only 2 more player turns before the game would have ended due to the player deck being exhausted. We lost due to outbreaks. It took most of the game to get blue cured; we just couldn't get enough resources (blue cards) to cure it earlier. This forced us to shed black and yellow cards throughout most of the game. It was one of those games when we both had a fairly even spread of cards in our hand (3 blue, 2 or 1 each of the other 3 colors) the whole game, and that almost always spells doom in our experience. It didn't help that we didn't draw the researcher or scientist.

On Friday I received a box in the mail containing: Race for the Galaxy: Rebel v. Imperium, Last Night on Earth, Snow tails, Shadows over Camelot, and Fluxx. We played Fluxx and LNoE this weekend. Didn't get to the others yet (we have a toddler, time is often wasted). Fluxx was okay. Loved LNoE (after we decided we did not like Zombies!! very much). I"m looking forward to Shadows over Camelot and Snow tails and checking out the new expansion for RftG.

Originally planned to continue our Valor of the Guards: ASL Historical Module Number 7 campaign, but when plans for that fell through, played "White Tunis" from Tyrant: Battles of Carthage versus Syracuse.

The Great Battles of Alexander: Deluxe Edition is an interesting system, but I think I need a lot more practice to master it. I think I'm using hoplites wrong as they seem very brittle in this game. I know they need their flanks protected, but it seems even when they go head to head against light infantry they can get broken pretty easily...

I am working on playing all the games I own that I have never so much as punched out the pieces. This weekend I played Tikal and Saint Petersburg for the first time. I enjoyed them both. I need to play them a couple more times before I write any reviews, but Tikal is probably an 8.5, while St. Petersburg is a 7.

We played a couple games of Qwirkle Cubes and Catan Card Game (which just arrived). Qwirkle Cubes are fast to get going and play, which is nice when we want to warm up or wind down. I brought them in to work today to show my coworkers, because I was telling them about QC last week. They liked the colors, and the wooden cubes.

SoCCG has been on and off my wishlist more than any other game. I'd read something that'd make me think I'd like it, then something that'd make me think I wouldn't, and so on. Finally I just decided to go for it. It has a lot of interesting mechanics. We added some expansion cards yesterday, and I ordered the new Artisan expansion today.

Attended Super Fantastic Gaming Hour Friday night. Made a little list of our games with some mini-session reports.

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/44458

Hoping the others in attendance will fill in the blanks. I was so focused on my own games, that I didn't see much of what others were playing.

Sunday I got to play Shade Tree Mechanic and tore down my steering colum to put in a new ignition. While a challenging solo puzzle game, I hope to never have to do that again. yuk Thanks to Autozone's loaner tools, I didn't have to buy the wheel puller or the lock plate compressor.

Surprisingly good weekend from this callsign:

2 games of Dominion on Saturday, and then a game of Small World. These were played as a foursome and the other 3 were new players - including the owner - so it fell to me to teach. Then onto Small World with one new player, who has since proclaimed it to be the greatest game ever (winning probably influenced partially) and is coming back round next weekend to play again.

Then some more Dominion on Sunday between my wife and I - 5 games to be precise, with a game of TTR thrown in there.

Now if I could only get one of my friends to stop monging it and commit himself to a weekend of Battleground: Fantasy Warfare I would be happy.

update: The wife just demanded that we play some Dominion - after Hollyoaks has finished.

We were finally able to squeeze in a game night with our regular crew on Saturday, so I did get a few plays in, which was great.

We started with a couple more games of Man Bites Dog, because it's Scott's new toy and he enjoys it. I think it's an amusing diversion, but felt like I wanted to get into the good stuff!

Next we introduced the boys to Hey, That's My Fish!, which I think I liked better with 4 players (had only done 2-player previously). The scores were pretty tight, with only 4 fish separating 3 of the players. I came way behind in last.

But...I made up for that when we played our perennial favorite - Vegas Showdown. I won! For the first time ever! It was very surprising - I actually had the most open space of anyone, but it was a combination of taking fame at the right time and scoring for diamonds that helped me edge it out for the win. I know it's geeky, but I can't tell you how excited I was.

This coming Sunday our monthly game guild gets together, so I look forward to a variety of games to talk about next week.

My friend Chris was visiting from UC - Santa Barbara so we got in quite a bit of gaming (I took Friday off.)

Friday:
Eight two and three player games of Race for the Galaxy using both of its expansions.
A three player game of Caylus (our second, the first was on Thursday.)
A five player game of Arkham Horror: Innsmouth Horror Expansion against Eihort. We lost and were eaten.

Saturday:
Nine more two, three, and four player games of Race for the Galaxy.
A four player game of Arkham Horror: Innsmouth Horror Expansion against Yog Sothoth. We won a gate sealing victory.
In the evening we had a party and, in addition to playing some Race, we played Do You Worship Cthulhu? twice. The first game I was the moderator and the villagers won. In the second game I was a worshipper and the worshippers won. I think I prefer being a villager.

Sunday:
I had Will and Bryan over for board gaming. Chris joined us for the first game and then left to hang out with other friends.
We started out with a four player game of Caylus.
We then played a three player game of Neuland. It was the first time for all of us and was very interesting. I can't wait to try it out again.
We then played a three player game of Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization. It was their first time (I am rapidly approaching thirty plays.) They were amazed at how brutal the game was.

So a good, gaming-filled weekend.

We had a Twilight Imperium (Third Edition) game planned on Sunday. This is always a special event, so we had to be ready! A friend came home so that I could teach the rules to him and my girlfriend, 2 of the 3 players who would be newbies. Once we were done with the rules teaching, I pulled out my brand new Galaxy Trucker that I had received the day before, and we played twice!

On Sunday, there was a warehouse sale at a local shop. Many good deals, but I didn't feel like buying some average games, even if they had good prices, so I bought nothing. I arrived at my friend's place with Twilight Imperium, but I also brought Cosmic Encounter, just in case we'd have time before the game. We didn't have any time finally, and we started!

I won the game easily, since I picked Imperial everytime the card was available (4 out of 5 turns; my friends don't like how picking this card pays as much as an objective you'll work on for many turns). The game last only 4 hours, so we decided after to play Cosmic Encounter! They totally loved it, and I was glad to finally show it to my friends because I knew they would love this game when I bought it!

I had family in town from St. Louis...my nephews started talking trash about how they could smoke me on my own board games! So it was on.

First, we played Schrille Stille. It seemed the colors of my nephews kept getting in the Top 6. So I lost...badly. I was last out of 5 with 50 points. The winner, my nephew David, won the game with 73 and my nephew Scott had 70.

Then on Sunday, we played Vegas Showdown. I got off to a good start and was collecting more income than anyone else. However, somehow Scott got off to a strong start with the game points and was 10 points ahead of everyone else. But that was short lived. As the game was getting close to the end, it was becoming tense with bids and laying out of hotel-casino. I had a "High Rollers" room off my board...but I decided to bid on a lounge so I could fill all the spaces on my hotel. I did this as I thought there was 1 more round to go and filling my hotel spaces would give me 5 points as opposed to doing "Publicity" where I would have laid down the "High Rollers" for 2 fame points plus 1 for doing publicity...went for more points. And the game ended as there were no more small premier tiles to turn over. David and Scott tied for first...the tiebreaker went to David with 35 fame points. Third/Fourth place was tied between me and Jason...and the tiebreaker went to Jason with 32 fame points. And fifth was Bob with 28 fame points.

Fun games...short weekend.
