I own both Railroad Tycoon and it's expansion Rails of Europe, but I have been looking at picking up Steam. Are they pretty much different versions of the same game, similar to Steam and Age of Steam, or is there something more that I am missing? Thanks

That's weird. This bit used to mention Shire Games, and tell you all how wonderful we are. But it seems to have got deleted. Let's see what happens this time ....

My take on it is that Steam has a number of advantages over RRT that make it worth buying, UNLESS you either really hate RRT (whereupon you'd probably really hate Steam), or really loved RRT to the exclusion of all else.

If you enjoy RRT, Steam still has plenty to offer - the smaller map and faster play, the lack of random elements, the ruleset that allows you to choose between a simple version (on a par with RRT) and a more complex version. Steam comes with two maps and is likely to have more expansion maps published in future, so there should be even more variety than with RRT. I also think that the two maps in the Steam box are both better than the standard RRT map, which I found to be somewhat flawed (large areas ignored and areas that players *have* to compete over, ultimately leading to a lack of variety between games despite the huge map).
