This year, my wifes family is doing "Homemade" gifts for christmas. We have one christmas in August, so that is why this is being posted so early... haha
Anyway, I would like some suggestions for awesome print and play games to make, that could also be considered "gateway" games. My wife thought it would be a really fun idea, as I made a copy of Micropul yesterday, and we played it a bit last night.

Anyway, games we have introduced to them that they have enjoyed so far:
Blockus
Fluxx
Bohnanza
Carcassonne

So PnP games that are somewhat along that (lighter weight) line would be great! I'll need to probably make 5 copies of each game, so if they aren't too elaborate that would be best.

Thanks!

Two good places to start (even if one's a bit underdeveloped):

I recently PnP'd Country Trains. Learning it took a while, but once I got it, it was a fairly lightweight affair, with plenty of "take-that." It is also extremely newbie-friendly in terms of artwork.

Reiner Knizia's Decathlon is another obvious choice. If you wanted to ramp it up, you could laminate a single sheet and package it with a narrow-point dry-erase marker and a bag of dice.

Great idea for a gift exchange. May I ask why Xmas in August?

Thanks for the suggestions so far T. Nomad.

My wife's dad's parents go to Florida every year towards the middle/end of august, so before they leave, we have Christmas with that side of her family. Her family is HUGE, so its actually kind of nice breaking them up.
The August Christmas usually about 35 adults and 12 kids or so.
The December Christmas for her Mom's side of the family is about twice that and constantly growing.
My side of the family is like 8 people.. haha.

For a gift exchange with a DIY theme, I printed and mounted Dsunke-Das Legespiel, a print-n-play version of Rat Hot available here on the geek:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/filepage/8852

I just mounted it on this 1/8" or so styrofoam board I got at an art supply store. Would have been nicer if I could have used something heavier (like wood), but I am not really an experienced crafter. Even so, it looked pretty good, and you could play it, and it's a pretty cool little abstract that would probably appeal to fans of Blokus.

It is only for 2, but it is quick.

That one sounds pretty decent, and quick. I'll add it to my list to make and try out.
I'll have to check for english rules when I get home from work.

Which came out very well.

I'm considering doing a couple artscows for other gifts, but these ones are supposed to be completely home made (I'm discounting dice/counter beads/etc that I already have around the game shelfs).

I've yet to order any artscow stuff, but I've been wanting to try a couple out.

Can't wait to get home and try a check these suggestions out. Keep em coming!
