I know HTML, am learning CSS, have Dreamweaver, and an unlimited hosting plan.

I want to learn/have a need for creating php & databases.

Any book recs for a beginner would be most appreciated (and possibly even tipped...)

Further to this: the type of application you're building is often called a LAMP site. So if you're looking for tutorials on the internet, search for LAMP as well as PHP or MySQL.

E.g.:

This may be a bit assinine, but check out PHP's documentation on its own website at PHP.net.

I learnt it by just reading this documentation. It works because it's short, written clearly, and with lots and lots of user comments. It's cheaper than a book as well.

Either way, good luck mate and have fun.

I found the tutorials at www.tizag.com to be good for a beginner, won't give you all the details, but enough to get you started and be a reference when you forget what you are doing.

Your suggestion isn't asinine. I just want to have something non-digital beside me while I work as I...

A) don't have the luxury of a dual monitor setup and don't want to continuously alt-tab
B) stare at a computer screen long enough as it is
C) want something I can read away from the computer as well

I've gone the e-book route in the past, and just really have an easier time studying with physical books.

I'm sure I'll be visiting the main site once I get my feet wet though in order to expand my horizons!

I've always found the "Learning" books published by O'Reilly to be excellent, as sbszine suggested. You should give them a try!

Luxury? A necessity. I doubt I would work for a place that only gave me one monitor.

This is a hobby, not a profession.

There are many talented developers here, but do you really think if this was for my profession I'd be asking for advice in the chit-chat section of a boardgame website?
