I realized this yesterday, as I was walking to my meeting, in which I would be presenting from my Mac. I was wearing these clothes, purchased from an environmentally friendly company (it's hard to tell, but the shirt is oversized), had my hair pulled back in a clip much like the woman in the picture, was carrying my reusable shopping bag with snacks for the meeting, and carrying my mug in which I was steeping loose chamomile tea in a mug-sized infuser basket.

Is this a good thing, a bad thing, or just a thing?

Just a. Well, except for the Birkenstocks, but I have to admit they're really comfortable.

You ain't no hippie! Where are the flowers in your hair? Where is the headband? Where is the oversized peace symbol pendant? Where are the holes and colorful patches in your jeans?

Nope, you're casual and green. Perfectly acceptable.

Let us know when you stop bathing and start smoking the hemp instead of wearing it.

I've been wearing Birks for almost 15 years. Jeff said the Birks were the most mainstream thing I had on.

Ha! You should have seen my jeans in grad school. Huge holes on my knees (worn that way, not purchased) and oil paint all over them.

Not the hand in pocket thing, but probably the smirk (with hand, because I'm shy).

Thank God for the shadows--I don't think that hippie is wearing shorts!

Remember, hippies, clothing is not optional! Take a close look on the left side of the picture. I think there is a hippie gal who though it was.

Yeah, Matt, look again! This was the only "real hippie" picture I could find that would stay out of RSP...

Luckily (?) that image is being blocked by company's websense blocker so I can't see anything.

She was giddily running up and down the hallway, actively not studying for her Advanced Biochemistry final, cute knees peeking out of the holes in her jeans when I realized: I needed to ask her out.

Being green or a naturalist isn't the same as being a hippie.

I've going to go out on a limb and say that Birks aren't hot. Still, they are better than Crocs or Ugs.

You will never be a hippie. Hippie was a counterculture that is long since over. You could be an old hippie if you were a teen to 20-something in 1967, which I assume you were not.

Also, it pisses me off when hippies or other cultures like hipsters co-opt things and these products or ideas get a stigma because of the association to the group. Birkenstock, for example, have been making shoes for 200+ years. They have been around that long because they make a good product... I've never owned any as they are not my style - though I have considered the close-toed ones - but I do know that they are great for people who are on their feet all day.
