I am looking for the most compelling stories from the old West, especially those plots with some nuance or intrigue. Not just "blazin guns, no speakums".

Please suggest those that you think fit the bill and perhaps a blurb on what made them so compelling.

Favorite is The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly - three guys, none of which like one another, all know part of a clue pertaining to where a fortune has been buried. They cooperate with, backstab, double-cross, torture, and ultimately have a three-way stand off with one another as they attempt to get the pieces of info they are missing from the others.

All while getting caught up in the Civil War.

Robert E. Howard's The Vultures of Whapeton impressed me when I read it.

I'm obligated to mention Dead in the West by Joe R. Lansdale.
It's more of a zombie story, that happens to take place in the old west, but it's an entertaining read, though very short.

Be on your guard. There are older and fouler things than Orcs in the deep places of the world.

You might look into "The Ox Bow Incident." I think it was a movie as well, but I've only read the book. Really more of a study of human nature, which happens to be set in the Old West, than a "Western."
