Approximately 10 % of the pages had to be pulled apart. the pages were sticking together at the corners on the inside by the spiral. I was lucky that there was no major damage but did rip a few of the holes on certain pages. This was probably caused by the ink not being fully dry upon construction.

Anyone else have this problem?

I had a similar issue with the rulebook to Galaxy Trucker. I would write Z-Man and request a new copy. Zev is really good about fixing stuff like that.

Great comment. Yeah, don't buy used porn mags ...

Seriously, z-man customer service is top notch, he will undoubtedly replace it in no time.

to be honest its not enough damage to warrant a new book.

Given that this is one of the games where aesthetic value and overall playing experience are more important than in many other games, I'm not sure if you might not regret it someday if you keep it.
It's not a rulebook that you will never look at again after a few games

But a big thumbs up, compared to people whining about very minor problems that's a very rare attitude.

Coincidentally, my FLGS mailed me today, and now I'm the prowd owner of this game. It looks really gorgeous.
Due to this thread I was very carefully when leafing through the Book of Tales, and I found that I had a similar problem but could divide all pages by starting from the back and carefully going from ~ page 40 to page 1.

Some of the pages of my copy are stuck together along the spiral binding, but they separate easily when facing pages are pulled carefully in opposite directions. After that, they're fine. No rips or tears so far.

Generally, I find cards from cheaper printing processes (from China?) sticky and unappealingly shiny. The TotAN cards, for example, have something of a linen finish, but they clump when shuffling and reflect light like a snail trail. Also, the shininess of the otherwise beautiful board can cause a lot of glare under certain light conditions, making it hard to read.

Nonethless, TotAN is an impressive production and I can't wait to play it.

At least you have ALL of your pages. My book of tales is missing 15 pages. Pargraphs 1354 through 1500 are missing. Z-man did respond withing a couple of hours of my email, and they are sending me another book. They are awesome that way.

let me say that there were maybe two pages max that have ripped holes. to me, this is a small problem compared to the potential of having many of the pages creased due to its thinness. lets face it, the books pages will be constantly flipped around.

here is an idea....
people who are greatly concerned about keeping the book at mint condition
should, in my opinion, remove all the pages and insert them into plastic sheet covers and put into a presentation looseleaf. the book of tales beautiful front cover would be inserted in the cover of the looseleaf. doing this will allow all the pages to stay fresh even with the roughest of handling. the books beauty will not be compromised.

Mine was like that in the matrix pages, I have not seen the issue in the paragraph pages. I was considering taking it backto the local FLGS where I dropped $59.99 on it.

My Book of Tales was fine, but some of my cards (mostly Status cards) came with crusty white stuff on them... not a major deal, just a little weird.

I had this problem with my book as well but I don't think it was from the ink being wet or anything like that (my cards on the other hand...those I have questions about how dry they were).

My theory on what is causing the problem are those dozens of holes along the side. Those need to be punched out of the paper and from what I know of book binding (which I'll admit is very little) those punches aren't made until the book is stacked and ready to bind. That way all the holes line up exactly for that particular book and all the pages are square.

Well being stacks of 100's of pages, that takes quite a lot of force to punch those out (100's if not 1,000's of pounds of force). My guess is that force pushed the paper down and squeezed it pretty tight, in turn causing some holes to "catch". All I did was just carefully open the book and turn every page to losen them up. There were some pages more "stuck" than others, but no damage was caused.

I'd venture to say that many copies of this game has "sticky" pages to some level and where the pages are stuck is right next to the spiral.

You'd venture incorrectly. My pages don't stick together at all.

I think this is a great idea. My Book of Tales had no issues (guess I got lucky) but I can see it's condition worsening over time.

But I LOVE the book. It'd be like murder if I disassembled it.

(Disassemble...dead. Disassemble...dead. Disassemble...DEAD!)

Thank you for the correction...I've ammended my post to replace "every copy" with "many copies" to include your case.
