Jackasses? You let a whole column get stalled and strafed on account of a couple of jackasses? What the hell's the matter with you?

Football Outsiders, a football analysis site, runs an article on three of the most popular football simulations: APBA, Strat-o-Matic, and Statis Pro. The discussion ranges over their history and their current incarnations. Good reading:

Thanks for posting the link, Robb. It's well-written and thorough analysis.

Though it's not a simulation in a class with the 3 games in the article, I've had a lot of fun with Pizza Box Football. The scores are very realistic, and the 'bucket-o'-dice' action generates a lot of excitement.

I prefer the college game and still enjoy breaking out Sports Illustrated College Football (the earlier incarnation of Bowl Bound but with better components) every now and then...

Although it's not a sim, the classic Football Strategy is still a good head-to-head strategy football game, and it has three different offensive charts depending on what kind of offense you prefer (balanced, ground attack, or passing attack). This game could use a rules and defensive cards update, but since it's out-of-print it probably won't happen. A complete game can be played in an hour or less, though.

Thanks a bunch for posting this, Robb. It's very cool to read about these games from the makers themselves, I'm glad they're still around! The comments section was neat, too; I was glad to see a touch of indignation that Paydirt and Second Season weren't mentioned. And the guy who mentions Electric Football had me giggling.
