For a marriage-broking game I need funny names for each of the 36 female and 36 male characters. Think Bart calls in at Moe's type of humour (Seymour Butz, Hugh Jazz, ...), but less explicit. A connection to woeing, love, match-making etc. is a plus (e.g. Trudie Baudge, Saul Meight). I came up with a list of possible candidates, but need the help of native speakers to check if they really work.

I'd appreciate your support in rating the names below using following symbols:
++ hillarious
+ fun
~ ok
- not fun
? I don't get it
X I get the intended meaning, but the pun is broken (pronunciation completely different)

Suggestions for new names or more catchy spelling are most welcome.

have fun

Andreas

I truly don't mean any offense, but I personally don't think these are funny.

The reason Bart's humor works is they are common last names.

Yours seem to be mostly made up last names (Miles Beehynd), really twisted pronunciations (Laurie Ward) or common jokes (Rick O'Shea).

I'd say about half made me struggle to figure out why it was supposed to be funny.

The best funny name from recent history in a game I can think of is the adventurer Monteray Jack. Its a common last name. Its a well known phrase (the cheese) requiring no mispronunciation. It spoofs Indiana Jones perfectly by taking a geographical location as a first name and a common last name.

Its the familiarity and immediately recognizable references that make it funny, and the sly references that make it continue to be funny.

To me.

I might just be the totally wrong audience.

I wouldn't really gauge these on a "hilarious" scale... it's more a mild amusement scale. It'd be tough to make me laugh out loud at a name, I think. In any case, I tried to ding the ones above that were just cringe-worthy, but realistically, if the name is intelligible, I think that's the best you can hope for -- by nature they're going to be a bit corny and cheeseball.

Most of these do fall flat.Try looking up the staff names used in the closing credits of the NPR radio program "Car Talk" and scan through their list of names like their
Statistician............Marge N. O'Vera
Accomodations...........The Horseshoe Road Inn
Mexican Food advisor... Hugh Juan Dos Tacos
Russian Limo Driver.....Picup Andropov
The Law Firm of.........Dewey, Cheetham & Howe
Optical Services........C.F. Eyecare
Working Mother Support..Erasmus B. Dragon
and many more
Sure they're mostly groaners, but they fit the tone of the program.
I'm not suggesting lifting these, but they might give you a little guidance.

Thank you all for your discouragement. Bad ideas are better scrapped early on. So your input was very valuable.

The names are not essential to the game. They are just to add some flavor, and to let the players tell stories why Mr X is perfect for Mrs Y, if the players are so inclined. It's not a part of the gameplay, only meta-game.

I think I'll stick to the same scheme I used in the german prototype, (sort of Lola Lovely meets Logan Lonely), which served the purpose well. Those names will be mostly kitsch, but that fits the theme and is a lot better than bad jokes.

have fun

To be honest you're going to struggle finding names that are amusing in their own right. With the right illustrations some may raise a wry smile (perhaps parodies of popular personages?), but as a previous poster has already stated, made up names are going to fall flat.

If you're desperate you can hunt the web for Garbage Pail Kid reference sites, but I'd recommend looking for characters as a whole rather than simply a name...

Perhap launch a competition on here? Users supply a sketch and a name, and winning entries get a mention in the final game (assuming it's a serious contender for publication)?
Garbage Pail Kids! I found a shitload of packs of GPK cards yesterday (I wandered into the local comic store for the first time in the 10 years I've lived here, seeking something interesting, finding mostly proportionally giant breasts on miniature superheroines).
