OK, this was a blast. Huge Soviet infantry forces assault a prepared Italian line with scant reserves. There are three major Soviet thrusts. One in the southeast, one in the center and one in the northwest. All three thrusts are dangerous and do outnumber the defenders. On the other hand, the Italians are in prime defensive positions and have entrenchments and substantial artillery support. Each thrust will be dealt with separately.

In the southeast the Soviets bypass the Italians in the front line, skirting past the troops in the towns in the middle of the night. Dawn finds two companies of Russian infantry preparing to move into Jagodny with only the headquarters troops impeding their progress. Unfortunately for the Soviets, it is dawn and that means that they can now be seen and they are hammered by the Italian artillery, ultimately being chased from the town and running into the Italian infantry coming back from the front to provide support. This attack has been effectively stopped.

In the center a large Soviet force works through the woods and then slides into a smaller woods in order to regroup prior to assaulting the town northeast of Jagodny. Again, the onset of daylight caught the tail end of the Russian column in the open and destroyed it. The Monte Cervino battalion assaulted the smaller woods and crushed it thus ending the threat to Jagodny from this direction.

Finally the assault in the northwest was somewhat more effective given the immediacy of the objectives (the hill at the front). The Russian infantry was able to ascend the hill and held on tightly, but they proved unable to dislodge the final two Italian positions. A counterattack by the regular Italian infantry was slaughtered by the Russian artillery. The two forces kept in close contact but neither seemed to be able to gain the upper hand. The Russians seemed to be tiring but they held on past the end of the scenario. Clearly they would have been thrown off the hill once the Monte Cervinos were able to move to the north from the central section of the front.

So it sounds as though the Italians won the scenario but that would leave out the losses that the Italians experienced in dealing with the Russian assaults. The only denominators of success were territory gains made by the Soviets and the losses they caused. Given these parameters the Soviets achieved a minor victory. They were decimated, they were unable to hold their gains, without additional support they would be unable to hold their starting points but the Russians only lost what they could afford to lose, men. A minor Soviet victory indeed, and completely reflective of what in reality happened on the eastern front.

What a wonderful piece of work.
