no, you start as the gender of your character. But I suppose you could do as you wish. However, that may engender even more confusion about gender identity in the game.

The character identity tokens have two sides, one with a male symbol and one with a female symbol. That seems to suggest you can play any character as an gender. Whether you're intended to play as your real-life gender or not is not clear.

It's double-sided to allow for the various sex-change effects that can happen in the game.

The characters, however, do have an explicit gender: Ali Baba, Sindbad, Aladdin, and Ma'aruf are all male. Zumurrud and Scheherazade are female. So which gender you start with depends on which character you pick.

However it doesn't affect the game either way, so if you wanted a house rule to allow people to start with any gender they wanted, it would still play the same.
