Okay, I realize that mentioning it here is somewhat of an announcement- but I need help with the name of a new fast-playing card game based on the combat system in my first game, Frontline General: Italian Campaign Introduction. The premise- it's all tactical WWII combat with lots of new Unit and Command Cards and games play in 20-30 minutes. With continuous testing going on right now, I don't mind saying- it's incredibly fun and fast. Best of all, there are only about 3-4 pages of rules, so it's super easy to pick up.

Each game is basically one combat engagement- it's all card-based with just a couple of dice for randomizers- paralleling the combat system in FG:ICI, but with some additional cardplay and ability to bring in reinforcements. It can also be used as a teaching tool to learn how combat works in the larger game or to perfect your skills and decision making in battle.

With this in mind, and the requirement to keep "Frontline General" somewhere in the title, and wanting to keep it simple, I had the following ideas for a name--- what are your thoughts/suggestions?

Frontline General: Engagement
Frontline General: Skirmish
Frontline General: Tactical Command
Frontline General: Tactics

Also, I don't want to re-use a lot of the commonly used terms in wargame names such as "combat" or "battle" (but realize "Tactics and Command" are also pushing it). I'd like it to be unique. Thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

Oh, and if I choose the name you come up with- I'll set you up with a free copy (if you want one) when it goes to print.

I've reposted this here for Grognard input since I am not sure how many of you frequent the Board Game Design forum on BGG.

What about:

Frontline General: The Sharp End

The men involved in everyday combat are the 'means', the sharp end of the sword so to speak, by which the generals fight their battles.

Add some language to "back up" the concept....besides, it sounds cool.

Frontline General: The Italian Battles

"Campaign" in the title I think takes away from the tactical nature of the game.

A recon platoon I was in used to say the latter on the way out from getting our op order. Either one, show a couple of grunts moving out down a road into the dawn.

I'll put another vote down for

Frontline General: Tip of the Spear

It's a still often used and popular military term, very rarely used in games, and accurately describes the scenarios you intend to model (front line combat units).

As it is based on an introductory game, perhaps something along the lines of:

Thanks for everyone's suggestions so far.

I like Frontline General: Tip of the Spear, but it is already being used for a video game title (expansion to Armageddon Empires). I want to avoid potential name conflicts like that if I can.

FG: Spearpoint may work-- it's passing the "Google test" so far.

And thanks John for the comment on the cover for San Pietro! Mark did a great job with that one, and he has already agreed to do a cover for the card game discussed here.

I'm guessing naming things is becoming hard to do. Sort of the same as the "The Simpsons have already done it" syndrome in animated comedies.

A few years from now, we'll be down to Combat Dudes: People in Wartime Places.

What scale is the players typical unit?

Squad level, individual tanks, individual artillery pieces, individual aircraft.

tc237 wrote:
Is the game set in Italy?

Not necessarily. This game is more generic- as the "units" could be anywhere. The larger games we do go more into theme and setting- this one focuses on the combat, which could occur anywhere.
