Does anyone know where to find some monster tables that are filled out and balanced with more than just the skaven one that comes in the main rule book? The monster reference sheets don't even list a gold value per monster or a suggested amount to be encountered. It feels like the game almost got finished before it was sent to the printers which is sad because it does have some interesting mechanics and a nice not to high not to low type of survival rate to it.

I thought I remembered that the rulebook also had matrices for a bunch of other monsters like greenskins and undead etc.

The expansion "Terror in the Dark" is what you're looking for. In the rulebook, there is a section called "Monster Matrices" with pages for Skaven, Undead, Orcs, Chaos, Beastman and Mixed matrices. Each page has matrices for Lairs, Quest Rooms, Wandering Monsters and Specialist Monsters, with Treasure and PV for each. There is also a section for treasure (14 pages!) listing a bunch of tables, including a "Monster Treasure Table" on a full page.

That's what I was thinking of, but I got mixed up thinking it was the base rules.

Apologies for resurrecting a long dead thread, but just in case other people have been put off by this sort of thing I thought I should mention this.

The back page of the rule book has some blank monster matrices you can fill out for yourself. For each entry in the monster matrix it has a suggested Points Value. Simply fill the entry with enough points of monsters (as listed on their reference sheet) to match that number. It also tells you how much gold to assign per PV too. 10 per point I think but can't quite remember. As mentioned elsewhere in the booklet, you should increase the PV of each matrix entry by a point or two each time the heroes retrieve a quest treasure.

Anyway, that's all in the basic rulebook, no need for Terror In The Dark. Although that does have a load of pre-made monster matrices for you.

Being at least half role-playing game, Advanced Heroquest expects a little more work from the GM than most dungeon crawling boardgames. On the other hand, it's also the most easily modifiable and expandable I've seen!
