The 2008 Charles S. Roberts Award nominees have been announced.

Nominees for Best Pre-WWII era Board Game:
Espana 1936
Manoeuvre
Pursuit of Glory
Unhappy King Charles
Warriors of God

Well, I've played FOUR of the five (not Manouevre, though I'd like to try it). ALL are worthy nominees, IMHO. Interesting, not one is a hex-based game.

So, which one SHOULD be the winner? For me it's extremely difficult. I've played Warriors of God more than the others. I've played a fair bit of Pursuit but only solo (very good). Played Espana 36 and UKC both one time FTF. All are very different. And really, all are very good games that I've really enjoyed.

Again the category sort of sucks. I can see PuG and Esp36 in a similar pre-WW2 category - but it is a stretch to throw UKC and WG in to the same mix.

No doubt there are some good games up there (perhaps all...), but what a tough year for an Ancients fan... Luckily the Deluxe SPQR reprint came along and bailed me out.

My opinion is worthless (I've played NONE of the above games), but I'm going to GUESS it's a battle between Unhappy King Charles and Warriors of God.

Good Gaming~! Mick

My $0.02. Manoeuvre is great but hardly the heavy wargame that voters like. Glad it got nominated though. Warriors of God is in the same boat and in my opinion a fantastic game. Just got UKC and it looks like a worthy winner.

To be honest, if any of those were to win I'd be happy.

Indeed. The only one I've played so far is PuG, which I'm very happy with.

Go for Glory!!

I'm hoping espana wins, but I think PuG and UKC are the most likely.

I agree none of them are bad choices. If I had to pick one I'd go with Unhappy King Charles. Though I haven't played Espana.

Considering that WWII all by itself still accounts for roughly 50% of all the wargames produced, I'm not going to begrudge Espana 1936 its status.
