Wow there are a lot of Fantasy films. Especially if you make your definition of Fantasy wide. Or maybe too wide......

I've been running a series of polls to determine BGG's Favourite Movies of different types. War has been completed: The BGG Top 100 War Movies, Horror is complete: The BGG Top 100 Horror Movies
Sci-fi is nearly done: Best Sci-fi Films: Top 8

So here begins a similar effort but for Fantasy Films. The films in this poll were sourced from this thread: Best Fantasy Films - Nominations Thread. I started the thread with an initial list but other BGG users could nominate any other Fantasy movie.

Now obviously Fantasy includes Sword & Sorcery type stuff.
And since I'd excluded Supernatural and Superhero genres from Sci-fi I'd kind of promised they would fall in here.
Then obviously modern Fantasy has to go in here, including anything with magic in a modern setting. And historical fantasy seems to fit here too. And, oh dear, some Sci-fi is arguably more Fantasy than Sci-fi.

So we end up with a rather broad church of Fantasy:
- Sword & Sorcery
- Supernatural
- Superhero
- Modern
- Magic
- Historical Fantasy
- Sci-fi Fantasy
- Time Travel

418 films have been captured in the initial nominations.

So here are the polls. Given the huge number of films I've chosen to randomly break them into 30 initial brackets. The top films from these brackets will then go into the next round.

For each poll bracket please only select one "Best" entry. Ideally do this by avoiding using the "Best" selection at all and then when you have finished the bracket upgrade one of your "Awesomes" to "Best".

If you think a film should not be on a list of Fantasy Movies, even if it is a great film, then can also select "Not Fantasy".

If you think some films have been missed then feel free to add your own poll for them or add a comment. If quite a few are added then I'll add a "Wildcards" poll.

There is a parallel competition running to determine the Best Fantasy TV series: Best Fantasy TV Series: Initial Bracket Thread

The point of the split is really "Series" vs "One-off". The fact that this maps closely to "TV Series" and "Film" is the reason for these terms being used and that "Best Fantasy One-Off" would have been a weird way to describe a list that would be 99% movies!

So TV one-offs, whether TV Movies, Plays or other one-offs will go into the Films poll. I'm sure there are other grey areas (like very short mini-series) but I don't intend to make this torturous for us.

There are a lot of polls here! Don't forget to click "Vote" at the end, or maybe even do it after a while and then click "Questions" and carry on!

Argghh: just noticed that bracket 19 is duplicated. Ignore the second one.

If you think some films have been missed then feel free to add your own poll for them or add a comment. If quite a few are added then I'll add a "Wildcards" poll.

I've started a notification thread for my polls which you can subscribe to if you don't want to miss the latest poll:

That one is more sci-fi than fantasy, right? Of course, I don't see how the Pixar movies or the Indy Jones movies are fantasy so maybe I'm the wrong person to ask.

LOL!! Catwoman: 5 votes - 100% bad. Please don't change that folks.

Still if Catwoman was bad what was the 1994 Fantastic Four?

No. This is science fiction, same as the Star Wars movies.

To me, science fiction is anything that deals with technology and its extrapolation into the future. Jurassic Park is about the use/misuse of technology. In Star Wars technology is all through the story.

I marked several other movies as not being fantasy, based on my (rather loose) definition above.

The Barbarians was a bad movie, but the scene where they are being hanged is so flipping hilarious I had to rewind and watch watch it again! laugh

Laputa: Castle in the Sky (1986), Sin City (2005), The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958) (Best Sinbad movie IMHO), The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)

Woowzers!

Bloody Marc Singer (The Beastmaster (1982)) doesn't have a chance!

Then why was it in the sci-fi poll too.
I couldn't vote for the (many) movies here that are a lot more sci-fi than fantasy.

Some films just are more than one category, there is no escaping it.
But here you should be scoring the films as how good a 'Fantasy' film they are.
I think Star Wars is Sci-fi: it has spaceships and laser weapons
I think Star Wars is Fantasy: it has magic (The Force) and swords (light sabres).

If films get a lot* of "Not Fantasy" votes then I'll take them out of the main Fantasy poll - I'll go with the majority view on this. If there are a lot of them then they may have their own "Best 'Not Fantasy', Fantasy Film" competition....

* - not sure what 'a lot' would be. Over 50% of voters is a possible rule, but some people may not bother with the Not Fantasy column.

That one is more sci-fi than fantasy, right? Of course, I don't see how the Pixar movies or the Indy Jones movies are fantasy so maybe I'm the wrong person to ask.

Most of the films on this list have "Fantasy" as one of their genres on IMDb. Jurassic Park does not. But I found it on another 'Top 100 Fantasy Films' list.

Indiana Jones also doesn't have 'Fantasy' as a genre on IMDb, but every film has some key fantasy element to it. If they get voted as 'not Fantasy' that is fine. But I'd like to give them the chance.

A big thanks to the 27 people who have contributed to the poll so far.
I haven't yet - but I will.... whistleblush Update: Have now voted!

Just noticed that at least 20 of the 27 people who voted made it all the way down to the last bracket of the poll because that many have rated Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Good work guys! I had feared that people would get 'poll fatigue' and not make it through this one!

I think there is a duplicate: "Castle in the Sky" (bracket 5) and "Laputa: Castle in the Sky" (bracket 14).

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who liked "The Cat Returns". (:

Here are some films I consider to be at least loosely in the fantasy genre, and possibly ought to be added to the poll.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (if you have Willy Wonka, you gotta have this!)
Tale of Despereaux
Aladdin (all versions)
Hoodwinked
Kiki's Delivery Service
Nanny McPhee
Pagemaster
Black Adder series, but especially Back and Forth
Wallace and Gromit and the Curse of the Were-Rabbit (or was this already done in horror?)
Fantasia 2000 (if you had the original, gotta have this one, too)
Quest for Camelot
Treasure Island (all versions, but especially the Charlton Heston one)
Tarzan (all versions)
Darby O'Gill and the Little People
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Swiss Family Robinson
Gnomemobile
Happily N'Ever After
Hook
Up

Its there as a test to determine the most astute of geeks. Congratulations.

Edit: And good to see that no-one has rated it. That is a nice little vindication of the poll - no random scoring (for this one at least)!

Wow. Good additions. I've put in all but two of these as wild cards in an extra poll at the bottom of the original entry to this thread.

What didn't I add? Swiss Family Robinson & Up. And the Black Adder series is in the series thread already, but I added the one-off Back & Forth to this thread.

Yikes! Some brackets suck, but Bracket 14 has 5 awesomes!

I think the random division of the list into brackets is going to skew the results. Whilst some brackets don't contain any films that I rate very highly at all, others contain several gems. For example one bracket contains both 'It's a Wonderful Life' and 'A Matter of Life and Death' - two films which I would probably rate above almost any other on the entire list! soblue

This is true, but the brackets in the initial thread are just used to make the poll manageable. I actually combine all the results, so good films will not be eliminated because a lot of them were in a single bracket and terrible films will not get through just because they were the best in their bracket.
Films will suffer slightly in getting less 'Best' votes than they would normally, but they should still get through to the next round.

After some more thought, I have to agree on leaving out Swiss Family Robinson as it is more action-adventure with a family-friendly slant.

And I would take out Black Adder: Back and Forth as it involves a piece of technology -- the copy of the DaVinci machine that Baldrick builds, which turns out to be a time machine. Therefore, this fits more into science-fiction than fantasy, based on my own definition earlier in the thread.

However, I would argue that Up really needs to be in the poll as it is just as much a fantasy as any sword-and-sorcery flick. It is full of "fantastical" elements (tying hundreds of helium baloons to a house and floating it away to South America, finding an airship with a 'lost' explorer, etc.) In fact, I would replace BA:B&F with Up in the poll.

Just my two cents.

I define 'Fantasy' by the inclusion of magic.

The story may not spell it out as such (as in the case of Groundhog Day, for instance), and I'm bending that definition a little bit to include superhuman powers that (sorry Batman) aren't granted by gizmos.

Still, all in all, ya gotta include something supernatural to get my fantasy vote.

(Sadly, some of my favorite all-time films (Back to the Future) don't make that cut...so I had to vote for some really ODD ones. Pinocchio? It was all I had to work with, in that bracket.)
