If you've participated in the Fantasy Films initial thread then you might be relieved to see that this one is MUCH shorter....

I've been running a series of polls to determine BGG's Favourite Movies of different types. War has been completed: The BGG Top 100 War Movies, Horror is complete: The BGG Top 100 Horror Movies
Sci-fi is nearly done: Best Sci-fi Films: Top 8

So here begins a similar effort but for Fantasy. The TV series in this poll were sourced from this thread: Best Fantasy TV Series - Nominations Thread. I started the thread with an initial list but other BGG users could nominate any other Fantasy series.

Now obviously Fantasy includes Sword & Sorcery type stuff.
And since I'd excluded Supernatural and Superhero genres from Sci-fi I'd kind of promised they would fall in here.
Then obviously modern Fantasy has to go in here, including anything with magic in a modern setting. And historical fantasy seems to fit here too. And, oh dear, some Sci-fi is arguably more Fantasy than Sci-fi.

So we end up with a rather broad church of Fantasy:
- Sword & Sorcery
- Supernatural
- Superhero
- Modern
- Magic
- Historical Fantasy
- Sci-fi Fantasy
- Time Travel

But even with this broad spread of genres we only captured 144 initial nominations (compared to 418 films!). Maybe Fantasy just isn't a TV thing.

So here are the polls. I've randomly broken them into 10 initial brackets. The top series from these brackets will then go into the next round.

For each poll bracket please only select one "Best" entry (or none). Ideally do this by avoiding using the "Best" selection at all and then when you have finished the bracket upgrade one of your "Awesomes" to "Best".

If you think a series should not be on a list of Fantasy series, even if it is a great one, then feel free to rate it 'Bad'.

If you think some series have been missed then feel free to add your own poll for them or add a comment. If quite a few are added then I'll add a "Wildcards" poll.

There is a parallel competition running to determine the Best Fantasy Film -> here.

The point of the split is really "Series" vs "One-off". The fact that this maps closely to "TV Series" and "Film" is the reason for these terms being used and that "Best Fantasy One-Off" would have been a weird way to describe a list that would be 99% movies!

So TV one-offs, whether TV Movies, Plays or other one-offs will go into the Films poll. I'm sure there are other grey areas (like very short mini-series) but I don't intend to make this torturous for us.

Thats the only one that seemed like "Fantasy" to me.

Blackadder I really made use of the genre, with lots of swords and a fair bit of magic. The later ones weren't really like that. They are more Humour in a Historical setting.

Series are really hard to rate: There's quite a few with great seasons, that then turn into complete and utter garbage.

Others are tough to rate, if just because they are unfinished: Berserk! is only about 8 books worth of a Manga series that is well into the 30s.

Yeah, the first series borrowed heavily from shakespeare, with witches, and apparitions &c. It's probably the least historical of all the series. But the other series and specials have a fair share of fantastic elements too: more witches, alchemy, dungeons, duels, tons of schemes, disguises, rituals, a time machine... And of course lots of anachronisms and cultural references.

Sure, the settings are historical, but none of the series aim for any historical accuracy. If Dinosaurs is fantasy, then Blackadder is too. I'd simply lump them all together as 'Blackadder'.

The same sort of thing also applies to The Avengers - although the poll specifically only asks about 'The Avengers (with Emma Peel)', the other series had stories involving fairly fantastical elements too.

Sounds good to me. Will amend them both.

Pitting my beloved Joan of Arcadia against two other amazing shows - True Blood and Dead Like Me? You sir, are a sadist.

And that's the fun of brackets.
