I've managed to lose nine pounds in about a month. The first seven were a complete accident, I didn't set out to do it all. What I did do was a couple of small things with my eating.

1) Slow down - I used to eat way too damn fast. I made a conscious effort to slow down when I eat. If I'm at a cookout or buffet I wait at least five minutes before getting another plate and by doing that I usually find I don't need to get more food.

2) Smaller portions - Americans eat way too much food in each sitting. Slowing down really helped make this easier because your stomach has time to react to what's already in it and tell you that you're full. You can always get more if you're still hungry, so start with less.

3) Stairs - Use them. Forget the elevator. Sometimes I have to, I use a cart a lot, but the rest of the time I take the stairs now. I can do the quarter mile walk and four floors of stairs to get from my desk to the MICU in our hospital in five minutes now. And I get less winded each time.

I know it will get harder as I go, I've already got a new bike on the way, but mostly I've been able to make tiny little changes that I barely notice to make a real difference. I'm 6'3" and at 236 pounds right now. 235 is the lightest I can ever remember being. My goal is 200. Of course I'll screw that up when I add in weights, but that's not for a while yet.

I do have to admit that, so far anyway, I'm really surprised at how common sense and easy it has been.

I was exactly 6'3" 236 about five weeks ago. Now I'm 218. My "fighting weight" is about 210. Keep it up!

6'3", 225lbs.

We should start a club!

Edit: And my "fighting weight" was 212lbs, in the Navy, when I was spending about 10 - 12 hours a week in the gym.

This has been discussed. Microbadge first! Who's going to design it?

OK, here's another for the non-tall club:

5'8". I was 156lbs a few months ago. I'm down to 144, which is about what I like. My stomach is flatter and I feel like I have more energy. Mostly done the was way as Fuzion - eat reasonable portions, no snacking, some exercise. It wasn't very hard. And now I'm hungry between meals, which shouldn't be such a big deal, but when I started this diet I realized that it had been years since I was really hungry.

I'm 5'11" at 205lbs. At my lean muscle mass, my 10% body fat put me at about 180-185lbs. So I'm about 20-25lbs over my fight weight. But I have lost 5lbs this summer so far.

Re: Walking a little lighter
I'm 1m72, 60 kg. I've been steadily losing fat and gaining muscle since I joined the BGG pushup club. I had to drop out a couple of months ago due to severe bicep/shoulder pain, but have made it up with pilates and P90X workouts, in addition to my morning walk to work, which is uphill 4.6km.

As far as eating goes, I've adopted a sensible eating programme which asks you to rank your fullness on a scale of 1 (starving) to 10 (stuffed like the proverbial christmas penguin). It advises you to never let yourself go outside the 3-7 range.

Lots more energy these days. In fact, I'm gonna go for a walk right now!

Re: Walking a little lighter

I'm 6'2" and currently 316 lbs.

About a year ago I had to have a physical for a life insurance policy - They told me I weighed 375 lbs. I don't know if I trust the accuracy of the portable scale the nurse was toting around, but it was still a heck of a wake up call. I've been slowly making changes since then, but the biggest change came two months ago when I joined a gym, and have been going 4-5 nights a week.

My goal is to get down to 225. I'd be extremely happy if I could get down to 250 even.

I don't want happiness by halves, nor is half of sorrow what I want. Yet there's a pillow I would share, where gently pressed against a cheek like a helpless star, a falling star, a ring glimmers on the finger of a hand.

10 1/2 pounds as of this morning. With the exception of some totally unrelated insomnia recently I'm feeling great. So at this rate by Christmas I should be just about the weight I'm shooting for.
