Hey guys. I'm looking for a pirate game that simulates ship combat and features historical pirates.

Any suggestions?

Thanks
Kenny

Merchants & Marauders
Winds of Plunder

^^Couple I been looking at. Arent too many out there.

Cartagena, I hear, has got a decent theme to it, but it is more or less centered on a single escape.

Most of the characters in Jamaica are based on real historical pirates. The game is far from what I'd consider a simulation, however.

Go with miniatures, more fun, more variety. Some ships, some pirates and sailors, a map or two and the rules and go!

I like Plunder a lot myself. Lightweight, yet lots of fun and detailed enough to be interesting.

Amusingly enough, Blackbeard is the boardgame equivalent of Sid Meier's Pirates the video game.

I guess i'm leaning toward Blackbeard. How does this game handly combat and which game handles combat the best?

Also, thanks for the support everyone.

Hi

I bought Blackbeard when it came out in 2008. I was really looking forward to it. Several other members in the gaming group also bought a copy. We had two games.

The first one was quite painful and went unfinished. The rules are poorly written though not complicated.

The second game played much quicker but just as it was warming up the game ended. We played the short game which took 3 hours. It has a lot of potential but just disappointed on virtually every level. I imagine the long game is what I am after but know I will never have the time (with friends) to play it, other games will take precedence.

I have now sold my copy. There are usually several copies for sale on here at 50% of the new price. If I were you I would buy secondhand, you can always sell it on for pretty much the same as what you paid for it that way.

It does have historical pirates in it and the game gets a thumbs up on the aesthetic front but the game just didn't live up to my high expectations.

I haven't read any reviews on here but I strongly urge you to do so before spending any of your hard earned. No doubt there will be some good reviews, after all it did sell out and has had another reprint.

Cheers
D
