I need some grognard help. I remember reading a term for a type of victory in which you achieve success by delaying the enemy rather than defeating them. It is a term like Pyrrhic victory but I believe it started with an F (not sure thought). Does anybody know what I am talking about? Thanks.

So that would be fighting a 'delaying action' then?

Fabian "strategy" was to avoid battle and harass the enemy so that Hannibal couldn't take and hold territory. It wasn't really a type of victory. It was more a way to avoid defeat. Fabius was eventually replaced because the Romans wanted someone to fight Hannibal.

Fabius was elected Dictator after the Roman defeat at Lake Trasimeno. He was eventually replaced by the co-consuls Varro and Paulus who promised to fight Hannibal. Varro has been immortalized for his loss in the battle of Cannae.
