So our group introduced one last variable to Escape in the Truck to prevent the Heroes from riding into the sunset so easily.

Granted the truck is filled up with gasoline, there are at least 2 Heroes at the truck, and one of them has a set of keys, we added a D6 roll to determine if the car starts, on a roll of 5 or 6, the car starts and the Heroes win. The D6 check occurs after a Hero has ended his movement in the space with the truck. Usual B-movie quotes are, "you're flooding it!" or, "try another key! Try another key! Hurry!!!"

One of the things that we wanted to change about the original Escape in the Truck, is the fact that only two Heroes are required to be at the truck for it to start and leave, leading to an entire Hero victory. In reality, the two Heroes at the truck would probably leave the other two Heroes behind. To encourage the other Heroes to be at the truck as well, each Hero at the truck may roll a D6 to check to see if the car starts. So now instead of having the other two heroes be Zombie-bait, they can all actively attempt to start the car. Having all 4 Heroes at the truck evens up the odds quite nicely.

If we hadn't introduce this rule last night, Heroes would've won this scenario in turn 4.

So, to put things in scenario format:

4) To escape, at least 2 Heroes must be at the truck and start the engine. To start the engine, first the truck must be filled up and one of the Heroes must have Keys. Each Hero that ends their movement at the truck may roll a D6, the truck starts on a roll of 5 or 6. Ex: Billy is the first to arrive at the filled up truck with Keys, but he cannot leave on his own, so he may not roll to start the engine. Jenny arrives second, attempts to start the engine, but rolls a 4. Sheriff Anderson arrives third, attempts to start the engine, but rolls a 3. Last, Sally arrives at the truck, attempts to start the engine and rolls a 5. Success! The Heroes escaped in the truck!

Great variant! Now, if only there were a campaign system to reward the survivors with continued play....
