A few business partners and I have been working with some local Rome, Georgia businesses to sponsor a Board Game convention for the Rome, Georgia area (one hour northwest of Atlanta, Georgia, two hours east of Birmingham, Alabama, four hours northwest of Savannah, GA, one hour south of Chattanooga, Tennessee.)

We'll be using a convention center that offers several very large rooms (perfect for many tables of games). There will also be a large library of games to check out in addition to the bring-your-own model.

My question is, is there interest in this community for a convention in this area? Rome has several very nice hotels--we are working out package deals with some of the major hotels for discounts.

Rome is a historic town with a national award-winning historic Main Street. There are hundreds of unique restaurants within walking distance of the convention center, and the center itself--which is in the middle of the down-town area--is set on one of Rome's beautiful rivers. Flanking the river is a several mile, landscaped walking path. There is much to do and much to see during "down time."

We are looking at a typical three- to four-day run (Thursday through Sunday) with four-day passes available in the $40 range (pre-paid) and at-the-door, as available, for $50. We are also planning to offer day passes for those who might not make all four days.

These prices are not set, but it gives you a very good idea of the investment involved.

If there is not enough interest for the Rome area, we are considering Atlanta or Chattanooga as secondary locations.

We're targeting late summer/early fall, 2010.

Reply if generally interested/curious.

Thanks,
Caleb

I'm in Kennesaw, so it is doable even if just for a day.

Re: Rome, GA Gaming Convention Interest?
There is already an event in Chattanooga every August called Gamefest South. This year it is August 13 to 16th. There is also an event in Atlanta every January.

I would say if you want to plan something for this area you should shoot for the fall, possibly mid October.

I do think Rome would be a fairly good location for a gaming weekend. There are a lot of gamers on the north side of Atlanta.

Re: Rome, GA Gaming Convention Interest?
Great.

We're looking at 10 AM - Midnight schedule, so that's plenty of time to drive forty-five minutes to Rome, spend the day, and forty-five back, give or take.

Re: Rome, GA Gaming Convention Interest?
Joel,

Excellent suggestion, and one we've already discussed at-length. I am attending Game Fest South (in Chattanooga) in a couple of weeks. so I understand how these events might conflict, and that is not our goal.

Peace, Love, and Games, right?

So, we'd work around every possibly other Gaming event we could.

Thanks,
Caleb

There is a duck in every game. You may not see it, but it's there.

Re: Rome, GA Gaming Convention Interest?
As someone who lived in Rome, I can say it has a very cool downtown area, but I'm not sure it is as beautiful as it is made out to be. Of course familiarity breeds contempt.

I'll be honest, you could have a game convention in a field of cow patties and I'd show up if there were good games and people to game with.

I agree that October needs more love for a convention. Dare I suggest a near Halloween convention.

Ha ha, well, you might be right, Jason, but I think the Forum is perfect for a Gaming Convention, so I'm glad you might be interested.

October is sounding good!

Re: Rome, GA Gaming Convention Interest?
I think something scheduled around the same time as BGG con would be good, because there are a lot of us that would love to game then, but, can't make it TX for whatever reason.

Re: Rome, GA Gaming Convention Interest?
Agreed, Roy.

Not everyone can get so FAR away, but many of us could do semi-local events, like the upcoming Game Fest South that has been mentioned.

As long as the Rome event would not conflict with other semi-local events, we could have yet another opportunity to game.

I also think this would be great - can never have too many game gatherings around Atlanta! I'd petition for a weekend different than BGG simply because I'm going to that and would hate to miss this opportunity

Re: Rome, GA Gaming Convention Interest?
Ron,

Of course. I don't think it makes too much sense to schedule on top of another convention/fest.

We'd do our very, very best to avoid all calendar conflicts.

Thanks,
Caleb

Re: Rome, GA Gaming Convention Interest?
I'll be releasing a tentative set of dates once Ward sets Game Fest South 2010 and once I get a list of other Game Conventions.

Look for that as soon as I can get it.

Re: Rome, GA Gaming Convention Interest?
I would definitely be interested. I am only about two hours away and my wife's family is from that area. I would suggest targeting Sept. or Oct. as a possible target date since the college kids in town would be back.

Thanks, Farrell.

I'm fast in the process of nailing down dates.

I visited the venue the other day for the fifth time to have all my questions answered--making sure they treat us well.

I live in Gwinnett and I would be interested as well. I might be even able to talk to some of the fellow gamers at our Sunday meetup and see if everyone wanted to go as a group since it isnt that far away.

Re: Rome, GA Gaming Convention Interest?
I would be interested, but only on the weekend.

As for date, I would say Oct or Nov, possibly whenever a fall break for
some schools is scheduled.

Good luck getting everything set up.

Re: Rome, GA Gaming Convention Interest?
It will be weekend only, a three-, possibly four-day event, so you are covered, Scott.

And, A. Gilmore, if you can gather ten people, we are doing a group rate, as well.

Thanks for the input guys.

Re: Rome, GA Gaming Convention Interest?
Friends,

Two from Chattanooga might be interested, especially if this is an October groove. The month of October needs something special. I suppose Halloween is special, but it's all the way at the end and is the eve of a Nov. 1 holiday, so really it may as well be part of November in my book.

Thanks,
Bob (& Lisa)
