Last week our refrigerator made sickly sounds one night, and we awoke the next morning to find that it stopped working altogether. Drats. Mrs.Spielfreak tried to call a repairman, but was reluctant to leave a message when the opportunity arose. Thankfully, she took matters into her own hands, and proceeded to defrost the fridge. Apparently there was some ice buildup behind the freezer that was restricting the flow of cool air, and by unplugging the fridge the ice eventually melted, and the fridge piddled water onto the floor. The fridge now works. Yippee!

That is the backstory. Not one to miss a chance at cleaning, Mrs.Spielfreak proceeded to clean the fridge inside and out while it defrosted. This included removing the breadbox from atop the fridge and cleaning its contents. Silly as it may seem, we don't keep bread in the breadbox, as it's easier for everyone to grab it from the counter. So we don't normally open the breadbox, and she was a bit surprised at what she found. The breadbox was full -- of balloons! It was packed with non-inflated balloons in many different colors. I guess this stash has built up over time due to countless children's parties.

When I arrived home from work, my wife pulled me aside, and told me in a serious and very concerned tone "We have balloons in our breadbox". The last time she approached me in this way was when she had discovered mouse droppings in the basement. Needless to say, I started laughing, as did she.

So, what do you keep in your breadbox?

EDIT:

Does anyone else own a breadbox?

I don't think I have a breadbox. Unless it's somewhere in my abdomen.

Oh, c'mon Bob, who are you kidding. You've been around since before they started slicing bread.

I do, but I only use it as a standard unit of measurement during 20 questions.
