I don't think someone quite thought this radio ad through:

PERKY FEMAIL VOICE OVER: "Juliet had Romeo. Cleopatra had Marc Antony. And now, your grill has Stop & Shop!..."

Didn't those first two romances end in tragic suicides?

Besides, Courtney lived. Otherwise, I think they would've included Heloise and Abelard as well.

I just heard this on the radio.

I wonder if the ad execs were too stupid to realize or if they assume the public is too stupid to reaalize.

In defense of the ad agency, you as a listener have left off another important part of those cultures at those times. When one was ruined in either Ancient Rome or Medieval times it was not uncommon at all to end your life with suicide. A man with no prospects was no man at all. Its still used today, not as common, but execs committing suicide at fortunes lost seems to have hit home here rather lately.

Tragic suicides? Hardly, for the time, nothing more than common at a man being beat soundly by his victor and having nothing left but to kill himself. The romanticizing of Marc Antony and Cleopatra is mostly to blame for this. What could or could have been a romance may or may not have been. The cold hard facts were Antony needed money to pay his army, Cleopatra needed men to keep her throne, therefore the 'match made in heaven' was complete.

So, upon the end of the summer grilling season, it will be perfectly alright for my local Stop & Shop to off itself? Thank god for the farmer's market!

Well, "Ancient Rome or Medieval times", that's a timespan of 2000 years. And we don't know very much about historical suicide rates at all. There probably was a relatively high number of suicides among poverty-stricken peasants, but there's really no reason to believe that suicide was common among the upper classes. Except that 'forced suicide' was a popular execution method for aristocrats in various times, but I don't think that counts. (And you could argue that Marc Antony's and Cleopatra's deaths were forced suicides.)

I don't think so. Otherwise you would know the game that won 35 Game of the Year awards.
