I think that all right-thinking people in this country are sick and tired of being told that ordinary, decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am.

This is a reference to the movie Kung-Fu Panda. For those of you who haven’t seen the movie (and why haven’t you? It’s lots of fun) this comes from a scene early in the film where Po -- the hero -- is working in his dad’s noodle shop, and his dad asks why he was late for work. When Po says he was having a dream, his father asks what kind. Not wanting to tell his dad he was dreaming of being a kung-fu warrior, he dithers a bit and finally says it was about noodles.

His father gets all excited and says "You had the noodle dream!" He goes on to say how this is a sign that Po will take over the shop eventually, and keeps saying "We are noodle folk -- broth runs deep in our veins". Po tries hard to act enthusiastic, but his heart is not in it.

In our family, or at least between my wife and me, the phrase "having the noodle dream" has now become a byword for seeing a vision of one’s future.

Now, I told you all that so you’d understand this story.

For the past two years my wife and I have been talking about what we want to do when my company’s contract with the Air Force runs out at the end of March next year. Although I will probably be retained by the new contractor, I’ve been working on real-time software (mostly flight simulation) since the first Reagan administration, and I am tired of it and want to do something different with the rest of my life. After much discussion, my wife and I have settled on the idea of moving to a much larger city and opening a game shop.

We’ve been putting together a business plan, and making copious notes on our ideas of how the shop should operate, how to pitch ourselves to the public, and so forth. However, this has all been mostly wishful thinking, at least until last night.

Well, last night (actually early this morning) I had an extended dream about being in our shop and shooting our first commercial. I could see the exact layout of the shelves and tables, how the camera should be positioned, what games to have our friends pretend to play in the background, and so forth. The whole thing was very realistic, quite believable, and went on for a while as I made sure everyone and everything was in place so we would have as few takes as possible.

When I woke up, the first thing I said to my wife was "I had the noodle dream!" She was barely awake, so it took her a few seconds to catch on, and when she did she wanted me to tell her all about it. After describing the dream, she agreed that nearly all the details matched what we had been planning for the last couple of years.

Since my brain was able to put all those details together in a logical, coherent story, and not add any sort of arbitrary, fantastical elements in the mix, we have now taken this as a sign that our dreams are finally sinking in, and that we are doing the right thing.

So, we are re-prioritizing several things in our life, and are going to do our best to get ready to move next spring. Luckily, most of our friends and several family members live in our target city (one of the reasons we picked it) so we have a support network in place. Now we have a real goal to work for, and we are anxious to get started.

I'd rather not say right now. There are already several shops in that city, and at least some of the owner/managers are on BGG, and I'd rather not tip them off that more competition is on its way.

Actually, my wife and I have detected what we beleive is an under-served niche market, and we will be gearing our shop to exploit that, including the actual name. We will only partially overlap the market for the existing game shops, but the first couple of years will likely be a struggle as we work to differentiate ourselves in the public's mind.

Rest assured: Once we are ready to open, we will be posting all over this website! (And there will be no extra charge for awesomeness.)

I don't think it counts towards your total thumb count actually, so no worries.

I think it's great that you're able to envision your future so well. Must be very encouraging. It definitely bodes well for your plans and I wish you the best of luck.

Aww...come on...can you at least tell me if it's in the OKC area? I know you're an OSU grad, so it's not out of the question...

A coherent dream of the future is awesome. At least no pandas came in your dream blinding you with awesomness while you were in the middle of a take.

The noodle dream, huh? I wouldn't get too worried about it, but maybe you should talk to your doctor about Viagra, if you catch my drift.

Not in the OKC area (although I lived there '86-'89), but at least somewhere in the Big 12 region. (I am so tired of reading about the SEC in sports.) So, if our plans work out, it'll be somewhere between College Station, TX and Ames, IA (I think), inclusive.

And actually I didn't graduate from OSU -- I was working my way through and life got in the way. The problem of making the rent payment and buying groceries took precedence over finishing college.

Aha! I know exactly where you're talking about! It's the town with that park that has a hardware store on the corner, and then a bank across the street, and city hall is a four-story building. That town, right?

Good luck with your plans.

Oh, man, you figured it out. That's the one exactly. And I thought I had done such a good job of obfuscating the answer.

And thanks.

Not in OKC...booo! We need more BGG'ers (and awesome game shops) in the area.

Good luck in pursuing your noodles, nonetheless!
