I'm looking for games to play with my girlfriend against my brother/his girlfriend. Especially those where you have to cooperate with your ally against the combined efforts of your opponents. Like Tichu for example, but more of a boardgame (light or heavy it doesn't matter) and less of a card game. Help will be appreciated!

Sequence plays teams. Not very heavy, so it depends what you're looking for. Non-gamers at a camping weekend, sure.

You play in 2 teams of 2 persons. But only one person wins the game, so you also compete against your teammate.
I haven't played it myself and therefore I don't know if it's any fun. I'd love to try though because it just sounds great, but I don't have the right group of people to play this with.

I've seen a 2vs2 variant of StarCraft suggested. (Or even 2vs2vs2)

Even though I havn't tried this variant, I can see the reason to think along those lines, and I believe it could add something good to the game, and make the experience as a whole better.

Victory & Honor is a great 2 vs 2 game. In fact, that's the only way you can play it. Though a Civil War theme, it's actually a very clever trick taking game. And apologies for suggesting a card game when you specifically asked for board games, but this is the best 2 vs 2 I know of.

Another good game, though it can get vicious, is High Hand, if you can find a copy. This game is best playing 2 vs 2, but the partnerships are variable each round, depending on circumstances.

To me, this is one of the Holy Grails of gaming: finding something to keep the friends who are fringe gamers interested, especially female significant others.

Some multiplayer games that work well with two:

Attika and Agricola, I think these work with 2 but even better is Samurai. However, Samurai can be a little dry when it comes to theme immersion.

Strictly 2 player:

1960: The Making of the President is on the heavier side, but will give you lot's of milage and fun. 2 de Mayo a lighter 'card driven' game. Plays in as little as 20min and is one of my favorites.

Others I recommend:
Sun Tzu
Hellas
Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation
Mr. Jack
Atlanteon is a close cousin of Samurai and even more abstract.

Dog sounds kind of lame when you hear what it is but believe me, it's extremely fun and addicting.

Team "Sorry!" using hands of cards rather then dice and you pass cards.

2 vs 2 is my favourite way of playing Sid Sackson's classic abstract "Focus" (which is also an excellent 2-player game, of course).

You can always blame your partner when things go pear-shaped...

Well, I would go for crokinole. It is a great team board game. It can be played as 1 vs 1 or 2 vs. 2 and works great both ways.

If you decided to buy a board, I recommend spending a good amount of money (probably $200.00 or more) for a quality board and it will last a lifetime!

This is one of about 5 games I will play anytime/anywhere with about anyone! It is difficult to refuse playing a game of this.

Crokinole is great 2-on-2. But my brother's board is 7 years old, has been (accidentally) stored in damp basements and -40 garages, and is still near-perfect. Price paid: 70CAD.

Nexus Ops is also excellent in teams of 2.
