Recently, I've created a fun little game that uses Marvel and DC superheroes and villains. I created it for my four year old boy, & he really enjoys playing with the cards and rolling the dice and adding up the pips.

My question is... Could I get in trouble, if I posted this game in board game geek, for anyone to download, and not for any profit whatsoever?

If anyone has any knowledge in this area, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks.

If you are using their licensed characters, then yes - you could get "in trouble". If it's a free PnP game, you can probably fly under the radar.

The worst they'd probably do is send you (well, BGG) a cease and desist letter or DMCA takedown request.

Knowing very little about the mechanics of your game, it might be possible to make the various powers generic so that the heroes are created from them using some sort of draw or point system. That would sidestep most copyright issues and may even help the game by expanding the possibilities.

I think you can actually post the files with all the copyrights specified.

Of course if the game gets goods feedback can grow and get a new form with a specific design with custom artwork and new supereroes free from copyrights.

I like dice games. And I like the epic struggle of heroes and villians.

And to show you what you are up against (both in a seperate field, cards or dice):

A dice game with a comic look (and great graphics) is Chunky Fighters.
A card game with super heroes is: Numbers League: Adventures in Addiplication.

I would love to see/hear about your game, and see what you come up with.

Given the precedent of copyrighted material already used for the exact purposes you describe already posted here, I wouldn't worry about it. In the case of a cease and desist, obey it quickly, but I really doubt you'll have any problems at all.

There's a collection of public-domain comics here:

http://goldenagecomics.co.uk/

Maybe you could use characters from there?
