I grew up with their folk revival in the 1960s and believe it or not, folk "hootenanny" groups were very popular in school in the early '60s. I followed PP&M over the years, including Mary's solo career, and am so glad that my wife and I saw them perform 3 years ago at Chicago's outdoor Ravinia Park. She and they sounded great, and she brought her bone marrow donor on stage to thank her, and it was the first time they had met. Great music, great harmonies and lyrics, and great memories. Thank you, Mary Travers.
My dad was a big fan of Peter, Paul, & Mary. I heard them a fair amount growing up.
I have seen my dad cry exactly four times in my life. When my mother died, when he dropped me off at college, when his father died, and during the last verse of Puff the Magic Dragon. "A dragon lives forever, but not so little boys...."
Best hobby, with the best people in the world. Gaming is the best!
Very sad. I'm a huge fan of Peter, Paul, and Mary and I doubt we'll see their like again. My wife and I were lucky enough to see them at Wolftrap a few years ago, and while their vocal quality had diminished with age, they could still bring you to your feet. Mary in particular still had that same lilting tone.

Yes, I really am that awesome.
What's odd is that I had no idea how popular they used to be! I thought my dad was unusual in being a big fan of theirs, but apparently half of chit chat had parents who listened to PP&M. I always liked their music, but they were so earnest and unwavering in their folksiness that it never occurred to me they might have had mainstream hits. When I read Mary's obituary notices (and saw all the chit chatters who also grew up with parents that were fans) it was a real surprise.
For some reason I was missing a bunch of their songs in our collection and her passing reminded me of them so I decided to go get them.
I had a bunch of free Amazon MP3 credits so I got:
* 1 of: Puff, The Magic Dragon [MP3 Download] * 1 of: Blowin' In The Wind [MP3 Download] * 1 of: Leaving On A Jet Plane [MP3 Download]
Then I went off on a tangent on some other songs I wanted from other people:
* 1 of: Music Box Dancer [MP3 Download] * 1 of: Peter Piper [MP3 Download] * 1 of: Last Starfighter - Main Theme [MP3 Download]
I had forgotten about Peter Piper until I heard it next to Music Box Dancer in the 20th Anniv album.
Oh, on that last one, go look at the City of Prague Orchestra. They had a 4 album list of Sci Fi Themes. Very good stuff from the promos. I would have gotten more but my free cash ran out. But when I get more (frequent deals), I plan to get more of their work.
(Oh, sorry about the side track of the conversation. Resume.)
