The facts from last night as we can gather them:

7:42PM - Started setting up Catan with both C&K and Seafarers expansions.

8:03PM - First dice drop.

11:50PM - Two out of three players quit from exhaustion, with scores at 9, 10 and 12.

Now I ask you more experienced folks, is four hours normal for this setup, or should we suspect that we hit a wormhole somehow last night?

The time does seem a bit long, but it's possible. Three player games typically take about 2 hours with C&K.

Seafarers seems to accelerate the game for us, as every new island is a 2pt. bonus.

Did you remember the 2pt. bonuses for Cathedrals, the 1pt. bonus for first to a cathedral, 1pt for the merchant, etc.?

That a house rule? We've only ever played the islands as one point. Unless you're included the settlement.

That does sound rather excessive, but can happen if the C&K warriors arrive swiftly and eveyone loses their city. Playing 6 player C&K with Seafarers is not to be taken lightly, but you seem to be only a 3 player, so something seems to have gone a bit wrong.

We've pretty much shelved C&K for basically this reason. When you have two or three players pacing each other and fighting for the last one or two points to victory, it can drag out forever.

Sometimes, though, a marathon game is exactly what we want

We played 1pt/new island. But you make a good point; ours was a three-island map, and maybe four islands, closer together, would be faster.

That was probably part of it. The barbarians took four cities. This was our third game of C&K and I don't think any of us realized how important knights and walls were.

This is the funny thing. We were more ruthless with each other last night than ever on Catan---blocking and displacing with knights, hording commodities, deliberately neglecting to remind opponents to feed their troops... it was what we'd been missing in vanilla Settlers. It was really fun and meaty. But almost too much.

The inverse of Woody Allen's complaint about cheap restaurants and life: poor quality and small portions!

I've seen games of C&K alone go several hours...painfully.
