So essentially to teach Luke a lesson that the "force" exists, he had to destroy starbase with hundreds of thousands of lives?

Couldn't he use that one in a million shot to "disable" the Death Star?

Brutal, Obi-wan, brutal.

I just watched Star Wars the other night for the first time in years (yes on VHS). You sir are correct. There is also a very interesting discussion about the destruction of the second Death Star in the movie Clerks (I think) about killing the "working folk."

Attempting to interject with Vulcan logic in a Star Wars thread? Heresy!!! So the choices to you are the needs of many vs. the needs of the few and that's it? Only Sith deal in absolutes...

And another thing. I've always wondered what what the dinner conversation was on Bespin city?

Maybe he was planning to tell Luke how to disable the death star but then he thought did any of them help me when Vader was kicking my butt?

Luke was out for blood, had Obi-wan suggested anything else, Luke would have ignored him.

Remember, Luke got to spend some time on Yavin 4 with Leia. She no doubt told him her parents were on Alderaan when the Death Star took it out. Avenging Alderaan was immedieately placed on the top of Luke's to-do list.

In the grand scheme of things taking out a gigantic battlestation full of people is no big deal when you're chasing tail. Even if it's tail you really shouldn't be chasing.

Actually, I don't think there's any way to make the death star inert without destroying it with a single shot. If you can find a place in the blueprints that contradicts this theory, feel free to post it.

3) Pay phone bill

I thought clones had largely been replaced by human storm troopers by the Battle for Yavin? I also would assume the support staff was largely human as well.

Well, based on something I heard on the radio (and the radio is always right), it's all ok because Luke was basically a white-trash hero anyway:

1) He lives in a patch of dirt in the middle of nowhere.
2) He has run-down vehicles all over
3) He's a grease-monkey
4) He's in love with his sister
5) He lives with his Aunt and Uncle because his dad killed his mom.
