Weasel Moot III, held Sept. 18-19 at the Days Inn Chicago, was a great time. War Weasel Jeremiah Peterson ran the tournament, which featured 38 players and 14 boards over the three rounds.

Our special guests this years were retro-luminaries from the Golden Age of the postal hobby: Don Williams (who has been attending one or two tournaments per year for several years now), Vince Lutterbie, Gary Behnen and Melinda Holley. Don (Fiat Belum), Vince (Down at the Mouth) and Melinda (Rebel) all published postal zines back in the day. Gary also might have been a publisher. I'm not sure about that. He's famous for having built four as Russia in 1901, a feat he's accomplished multiple times.

In all, we had 12 travelers: two from California, three from New England, two from D.C., one from Delaware, two from Missouri, one from Ohio, and one from Texas. Among the travelers were four DipCon champions: Edi Birsan in 1988, Behnen in 1991, Rick Desper in 2005, and Doug Moore in 2007. Moore, of course, was also the world champion that year.

All these luminaries, however, were overshadowed by the presence of a certain Chicagoan who also happens to lead the free world. Yup, President Barack Obama was there for much of the weekend, as you'll see when photos of the awards ceremony begin to circulate.

Matt Sundstrom won the event with the weekend's only solo. He also won our smaller CODCon tournament in the spring. In addition, he was our Weasel of the Year in 2007-08, and he's the second seed in our upcoming Weasel Royale club championship (Nov. 7), so he has set a pretty high benchmark for success in our Chicago hobby.

The final standings follow. The tournament committee, led by our War Weasel, is already looking at dates for Weasel Moot IV, which currently has the working subtitle of "This Time, It's War!" The weekend of September 10 is the lead candidate at the moment, but we're also thinking about August to facilitate our bid for the 2012 WDC. For that same reason, we are almost certain to leave the cozy Days Inn, our downtown home for the past two years, for a larger venue with a cheaper room rate near one of the airports or in the suburbs. Stay tuned.

Hope to see you at Weasel Moot IV: This Time It's War!
