I have been interested in civilization building board games for a while, that use a fixed/modular board, like Avalon Hill's Civilization and Settlers of Catan. All the ones I have looked at so far appear to be imports. Does anyone know if these types of games have been made in the United States or Canada, that are not based on movies or computer games?

Welcome to BGG!

Are you primarily looking for historical recreations (Rome, Ancient China, Middle East, etc.) or games with fictional settings like Settlers of Catan?

As it happens, a guy who started showing up to my group is working on one. It looks pretty cool: it uses hex tiles with a bunch of hexes in each. I haven't played it yet.

You might look at Tempus or Antike.
