This originated from a series of defeats at the hands of Mr. Keldon's AI (I'm slowly getting better, still...)

Now, with so many dimensions towards victory: current VP, VP flow capacity (production+consumption OR cards+Deficit/MerchantW), cards in hand, card flow, distance to end game in both cards to fill and VP chips - it's easy to wrongly consider oneself leading - and have victory snatched from you at last moment. Maybe only a really experienced human, or Mr. Keldon's AI could get right the relative values and trade-offs between these. But generally, the properly weighted aggregate 'victoriness' from all these factors progresses smoothly and with positive feedback so it's essential to get it right from the start.
Even apparently grossly efficient investments like Alien Toy Shop or Replicant Robots (settle -2 for 4 investment(3 with phase discount)) may get you behind instead of forward.

What I've seen often enough for overtaking:
- Moderate VP production/consumption engine (say 4 or even 6 VP/cycle) but without extra cards drawn in the cycle stalls relatively ; opponent builds better engine and overtakes. And stopping the VP cycle to get or put cards (Explore, Settle/Trade, Develops etc) may get one further back in the Race
- Surprising 6-dev also paying from many interactions with existing cards - say 10 VP or more
- Big military world - but this shouldn't be a surprise from a big military player

Any other things to do in these cases ? Or just the "Race is short, play again soon" ?

When playing with Most goals and/or takeovers, both allow for huge point swings with one move. This is most drastic in 2p, where points your opponent loses are directly added to your score - stealing a Most goal is 10 points. Takeovers allow for sick reversals, it's rare but keep your eyes open for it.

Just don't get sucked into goals. If you're halfway or good way through the game and are feeling "iffy" about seeing the 4th production world, Rebel mili-world, or explore card into your hand, may want to just forget that unless those cards get you alot of points anyways.

Shortcuts....
--Imperium Cloaking Technology. Remember to use this! If it's in your hand, see if you can work out a way to build this, then settle a world.
* All you need is 3 military towards Terraformed World or Galactic Trendsetters
* use temporary military like NMT or Space Mercs. to get you there!
* Remember that color specific military strength will apply to the appropriate colored, non-military world.
Smuggling World for Galactic Studios
Alpha Centauri + Gem Smugglers for Old Earth + Imperium Gem Consortium
* Abandoned Alien Uplift Camp + Alien Uplift Center for Lost Species Ark World + Gene Designers
* Alien Tech Institute + Deserted Alien World + Alien Rosetta Stone WOrld for Deserted Alien Library + Alien Robotic Factory + Alien Data Repository
There are definitely others, but those are among the most expensive colored worlds, which also give good amt of pts
