There has been some discussion about whether or not the different editions of Space Hulk are actually different games, or simply the same game (rules and mechanics) with revised components.

I thought that it would make sense to open a forum thread here to discuss these differences.

To discuss differences in components, please find the sister thread http://www.geekdo.com/article/3971564

Although I own all three editions of Space Hulk, I must confess to never having actually played second edition. I simply added the tiles to my "tile pool", and used the miniatures to add to/upgrade the first edition minis.

Differences between first and third edition:
First edition Space Hulk (which doesn't have a separate entry on BGG, but is lumped in with 2nd ed) has three expansions recognized on BGG, Deathwing, Genestealer, and the Campaigns book.
While parts of these will work with other editions, it may take some adaptation/house rules to make them fit.
Third edition includes a few of the rules from the expansions, and also makes changes in the rules that generally seem to be designed to close loopholes that some players were taking advantage of in ways that were counter to the intent of the game.

Bryanwinter has an excellent thread covering rules changes between 1st and 3rd edition. I hope that he posts his compiled list in this thread. Menwhile, here's a link.
