No, bitching through a poll with no positive response available seems fairly RSP-ish. I don't think this belongs anywhere else

Have you considered hosting a windows 7 launch party? There's some very impressive videos out there explaining how you and your friends can enjoy yourselves while showcasing the best operating system in the world!

Or you could get a quad core, set up some virtualization software, and run 3 different OS at once.

A few years ago I upgraded my computer's hard drive, and found out that in order to make it the primary boot drive I would have to purchase a new copy of Windows (despite already owning a legal copy on the other drive). I switched to Ubuntu, dual-booted for a few years, and then reformatted the Windows partition and have never looked back.

Give it a chance. You will get used to it.

Me - click on Europa Universalis III icon on my desktop to play a game

Vista - Do you want to allow this program to run?

Me - click yes

Vista - Are you sure?

Me - click yes

Vista - Are you double dutch sure with sugar on top?

Me - click yes

Vista - By clicking yes, information from your computer may be sent to the FBI, Interpol, and your Grandmother

Me - click cancel

Vista - Only users with administrator privileges may click cancel. Click OK to go back to previous screen

Me - click OK

Vista - Only users with administrator rights may click OK

Give it time. It grows on you.

Of all my customers, no one is enthusiastic about Vista. Some use it because they feel they have to, cheap new laptop or some such. The vast majority are still choosing the run XP. Every computer that I have resold for the last several months have included an OEM Vista Business license with XP Professional installed under the downgrade rights. It is an annoyingly obscure process that surely boosts Microsofts Vista sales figures.

There is a sure cure however. Reference Kevin's post above.

*edit*
Obligatory qualification. This cure requires that you have an adventurous spirit. Windows is for people that want their computer to just work. The downside is that it often just doesn't work. Linux is for people that want their computer to do what they want. The downside is that you need to be willing to learn a little bit about it.

Unfortunately Mac isn't the best of both worlds. It has a larger compatibility list than Linux, and it is more stable than Windows. Still, it doesn't really match Windows at app compatibility, or Linux on ease of customization or application upgrade.

There's also the problem of the Mac Tax if you don't want to buy top of the line hardware, which wouldn't be a big deal back if top of the line hardware was actually useful. With minor compromises, one can build the equivalent of the single CPU Mac Pro for about half the price. You'd just have to use Linux or Windows on it though.

This looks like the perfect time for the classic RSP demand for references. I challenge you to demonstrate that Linux isn't stable.

Whatever works for you. I wouldn't say you are weird. I would say that you are content with what Microsoft has given you. That is not necessarily weird or bad.

References? I have a whole resume full of 15 years of Linux-WIN32-OS2-Solaris-AIX-OS390-AS400 development references. Which is more than you are going to get with your Google skills.

'Nuff said as far as I'm concerned. It probably isn't fair to compare the desktop operating systems mentioned so far to all of those that you have worked with.

This being RSP, I'm guessing that the Venn diagram showing Linux as "stable" is what prompted your call for references?

Right there with you, DC. I've used Vista for the past year and have had virtually no issues with it. There was a MS driver that kept giving me fits, but the OEM driver works fine (network driver, fwiw). I upgraded to Win7 about a month ago and have noticed a significant speed increase as well as enjoy the interface enhancements. LOVE Win7, but liked Vista just fine.

I've never had an issue with Ubuntu's stability in the ~4 years I've used it as my main OS. Granted, I use it on older hardware and mostly for web, light office, and occasional games/emulators; so if you have to do bleeding edge hardware and apps YMMV. But I'm perfectly happy with it.

Software (I guess even hardware) is as stable as how you use it and what you use it for. It's as good as its utility in whatever you're applying it. And yet, despite this subjectivity, Vista still sucks out loud.

I haven't had any problems with Macs in these departments...
