Well, I'll begin the epic "this isn't what I expected" bitch-fest that is bound to happen by complaining about the rulebook format!

Wait, no, there's no need to get violen--

-- one severe beating later, I have something constructive to add:

The link to the German rules is actually http://files.neuroshima.org/stronghold_DE_spielregel.pdf

After reading designer diary #11 on boardgamenews I see that the event cards didn't make it into the game.

Anyone have thoughts on the game after reading the rules? I haven't had a chance to read them yet.

Sieges are from all ages, so there was absolutely no need to include fantasy creatures. On a sidenote: Stronghold seems to take place in medieval times, and as far as I know orcs and goblins were invented by J.R.R. Tolkien, so other magical creatures people believed they existed at those times would have fitted the bill better.

Nevertheless I've been reading the rules with great interest, and if time permits I'll try to play it in Essen to see how it works out. A game is a game and in this case for sure not a history lesson nor simulation, and I'll treat it as such.

The English is halting at times, or there're some errors that make understanding a bit difficult. For instance, I don't quite get how the drawing of phase cards work in the beginning. But I guess there're for all of the phases (except phase 1 and 6) five different versions, and the inwader picks one semi-randomly (draw two, choose one) for each phase, which locks him into a general strategy for the rest of the game. But nevermind that...

At surface it looks a bit complex, simply because there're so many options. Will need to get the rules another once over, this time reading the .pdf so I get pretty colors.

Yes, for the phase cards, I understood the same thing. And even if there are lots of choices possibles in theory, in practice there won't be so much, as the actions will be limited for the attacker by the phase cards draw/selection.

I don't think there was too much medieval-style sieging going on in WWII.

The theme doesn't look that difficult to change. The coloured cubes aren't really that strongly identified as orcs, trolls and goblins.

Different style, yet a siege: Leningrad.

Rules are very well done. Clear illustrations (and lots of them), nice art without overpowering the presentation, rational sequence of presentation.

Only thing I can't find is #23 on the orientation to the Board. I can see 1-22, but 23 is hiding somewhere.

I'm a little surprised that Attacker and Defender cubes are the same color, but from the rules it does not appear that this will be a problem in play as they all have their place. The color/quality sequence is consistent for both sides, which is helpful.

I am very glad I've preordered. As near as I can tell before actually playing, I'd say that Ignacy has done an outstanding job on this game.
