What you think the best tactical wargame at the moment?:

- ASL.

- Conflict of Heroes.

- Combat Commander.

- ATS.

- Lock,n Load.

- World at War.

Only one vote, please.

My vote is: Conflict of Heroes.

Define Best - Best at What?

Define at the moment - in production, available at all, affordable?

Also, why isn't Space Hulk a Choice?

Flame war in the making!

Everyone's got their favorite system. It really depends on what "best" means in your eyes.

ASL - unparalleled complexity and depth, can cover the entire war, but the buy-in with respect to both time and money is enormous. Some people feel that the unparalleled complexity is a drawback, not a strength. For grognards only.

CoH - Sort of the polar opposite of ASL, the simplest system here, very accessible, plays fast and fun, sacrifices less realism than you would expect, but not deep enough for some. Also has limited scope - East Front only so far.

Combat Commander - Just slightly more complex than CoH, relies entirely on card play, which some think is a pro and others think is a con. No vehicles, by conscious design choice. Wide scope and very replayable.

ATS - Similar to ASL, though less complicated. Buy-in is less, due to self-contained modules and simpler rules, but some feel that lessens the system's flexibility. Also for grognards only, though probably more accessible than ASL.

I'm not familiar with LnL or WaW.

I would throw The Gamers/MMP's Tactical Combat System in there (GD series, A Raging Storm, Leros, etc...) myself

Seems like you are missing some tactical games in your list.

Panzer Grenadier: Eastern Front Panzer Grenadier series by Avalanche Press
Leros TCS Series by MMP
The Devil's Cauldron: The Battles for Arnhem and Nijmegen Newer Grand Tactical series by MMP (company level)
Landships! Tactical Weapons Innovations 1914-1918 WWI tactical trench fighting by COA
In the Trenches: Opening Engagements New WWI Tactical series by Grenier Games

These are just a few. I am sure there a others I am forgetting.

It's also a slightly different scale than the others, which also indicates that we need to nail down what is meant by "tactical" as well as "best."

Not sure I can answer what is 'best' but the one I enjoy the most is Combat Commander.

Conflict of Heroes is up there as well.

Valor & Victory is also missing from the list. As are many of the fine tactical and innovative miniatures rules like CrossFire: Rules & Organizations for Company Level WW2 Gaming.

I'm going with Valor & Victory as my fave, but if I'm forced to choose a commercial product I'll go with Conflict of Heroes: Awakening the Bear! – Russia 1941-42.

Here's where we did this before: year-old poll.

And here's a Geeklist about it.

Oh . . . and I'll vote for Lock 'n Load, just because I recently bought three of the games and have two more on preorder. LnL gets me back into the up-close tactical detail and dicey excitement I used to enjoy when I had the time and patience for ASL. "More game, less guff," as LnL's motto goes. Also, LnL seems better suited for solitaire than most games of this type; that's important to me.

For the pre-gunpowder era, I like Ancient Battles Deluxe.

There isn't just one. You have so many scales, time periods and styles to choose from, that you can't say one is best.

Here are the ones I'm currently enjoying:

Medieval/fantasy: BattleLore
Ancient: Simple GBoH
Musket & Pike: Under the Lily Banners
American Civil War Brigade: Three Battles of Manassas
Civil War Regimental: Dead of Winter (second edition)
WWII Squad: Advanced Tobruk
WWII Platoon: Bloody Ridge
Modern Platoon: World at War: Blood and Bridges

Let us not forget the Excellent Groggy detailed offerings of Clash of Arms;

Paul Dangel's Battles of the Age of Reason, like Leuthen: Frederick's Greatest Victory

Ed Wimbles La Bataille games, like La Bataille des Quatre Bras

You left off Up Front, Soldiers: Man-to-Man Combat in World War II and Combat.

I vote for Up Front as the best. From your list, ATS.
