Twilight Imperium (Third Edition) Just played another six player game of this yesterday! Seven hours of pure space opera bliss! Even though I didn't win, I had an incredibly enjoyable day, especially as my Muaat Imperial Fleet crashed into the Lizix Mindnet with devastating effect! My two massive war suns (think Deathstars) blasted the Lizix dreadnoughts, slicing their hulls to ribbons with our particle beams, while squadrons of our star fighters defended the capital ships from harm! We finished by irradiating the surface of the Lizix homeworld with a tremendous bombardment, after which we landed four assault divisions, who raised the Muaat standard over the blackened ruins of the Lizix capital.

A game that provides this kind of narrative after a session is a rare and precious thing!

Space Alert's been mentioned a few times already, but let me emphatically recommend it again. I just played it for the first time this weekend, and it's awesome. As my brother said, after another 15-minute disaster, "It really feels like we're on the bridge of a ship under attack!"

Star Fleet Battles and it's various spinoffs are great too, if you like the Star Trek universe.

If I could offer only one suggestion I'd say Galactic Emperor which ironically enough has not been mentioned yet. Man it's a really cool game though.

Race for the galaxy is my favorite and I love sci-fi games.

Also, I can't belive no one has mentioned Battlestar Galactica. Thats a great game, even if you haven't seen the TV series.

Some older sci-fi games are great. I second the recommendation of Merchant of Venus (especially with the great pnp redesign available from the game's page) and will add games like Voyage of the B.S.M. Pandora, The Wreck of the B.S.M. Pandora, Intruder (if you liked the first Alien movie) and Starship Troopers.

Space Alert is great, but stressing It's excellent when everyone playing it has the same level of experience with the game. It's also a very innovative game that really expands what a boardgame can do. Do check it out...

Ad Astra

A recent game that's a great mix of Race, Settlers, Shogun and Puerto Rico. It's fairly fast and rewards those who adapt to the patterns of other people.
