Our games typically have a lot of players so we've made a few changes to Three Dragon Ante (3DA) to accommodate this. Firstly we play double deck; two decks of 3DA shuffled together. This saves time on reshuffling and adds some interesting elements such as multiple Druids, Tiamat and Bahamut. As a consequence of this player can have a 2 dragons of the same strength in a color flight. We resolve this in favor of whatever number occurs twice. We have had a few occasions of Tiamat, Tiamat, 1 Green Dragon which is fairly devastating.

Buying cards when your hand is reduced to 1 or 0 cards can also be devastating. Imagine a scenario where you flip a Bahamut from the deck and pay 13 gold only to draw four junk cards. This type of situation can swing the game heavily. Our house rule is that you keep the card flipped and draw one fewer card than indicated in the rules. This has the drawback of other players knowing your card In the case of high card draw you will become the target of Red Dragons.

We also have “gentleman's rule” about the target for effects like a Red Dragon or Bronze Dragon when the player is first or all targets are tied for strength. When this occurs we target the player with the most gold to keep things civil. This doesn't apply in situations where going after the player with “short stack” can win the game.

Finally, a goofy rule we have instituted. Due to the difficultly of putting a Copper Dragon flight on the board we decided than anyone who does so automatically wins the game. In the couple hundred games we have played this has only happened twice so it seems balanced.
