After our recent play sessions, we got to talking about dealing out some of the Arts & Culture cards at the start. Some of them have effects that are much more useful earlier in the game, and not so useful later, when we're typically buying cards. We were thinking of dealing four per player, keep two each; the idea being to help to balance out any unevenness in the cards dealt. I would expect that the advanced rule of playing to a higher VP level should be used, increasing it at least two and probably three, since the VP total is inflated at the start. And the VP threshold for event cards should perhaps be raised too, probably to six.

Has anyone tried doing anything like this? If so, how'd it work out?

I've heard others discuss this option, but haven't tried it myself. It sounds like you've got all of the details for your variant worked out; I think it would work well.

A similar variant that I've heard suggested, is to assign a specific card (or two) to specific home islands, creating a sort of "personality" for each start location. Something like Ocean Chart for Hiva, Poi for Raiatea, Tattoo for Samoa, etc. There would, of course, be balancing issues. But again, I haven't heard of anyone actually playing with rules like this.
