OK, as of right now, the all-important stats page says:

Questions Asked: 47,522
Questions Answered: 993,491

That's right, we are only 6,509 GeekAnswers away from our millionth semi-permanent response. (Many answers and questions have disappeared due to people deleting them or just peevishly eradicating their entire account, but we can't do anything about those).

I sure hope there's a huge celebration planned, along with lots of fanfare for the 1,000,000th answerer and lots of stats about the most popular questions (both in answers per month and thumbs). If I were just given two tab delimited files of all questions and answers (at the time of the event), I'd gladly do the honors of culling the best of the best.

Anyway, just wanted y'all to know of the very important event on the horizon. And if Aldie were to give something like 1,000,000 geek mill (a mil being 1/10th of a cent) to the celebrity who answers that millionth time, I bet there would be a flood of activity in the GQ area of BGG. :)

See, that's the problem.

One does not use GeekQuestions. It is not a tool. It is not where one goes to ascertain simple facts. No, no. That's what game-specific forums are for.

GeekQuestions is something you do. It is a way of life. It is a never-ending conversation. The fact that there are curly punctuation marks has nothing to do with requesting and/or giving information.

I don't want to be a party-pooper, but to be honest I don't see a reason for big celebration here. First off, half of the questions asked doesn't really make sense. I see people asking questions with only one word, like "Robert?" and "Why?". It's funny for the first few times but gets tedious after a while. Secondly, if an user submits a post to a question, it doesn't mean that the question is actually answered. There should be some kind of objective criteria to establish a post as an "answer"; I guess this could be done through the geekmod approval system. Until then "1,000,000 answers" means "1.000,000 spammy posts" cluttering up valuable server space.

These two issues could easily be solved if any attention were given to GeekQuestions and GeekAnswers by the admins.

See, you can thumb and tip questions and answers (well, the tipping only half works). But you can't see questions and answers by thumb count or by user/thumb count. There simply are no tools to utilize that information about which questions and answers are, indeed, "good."

If those were implemented, you would be able to weed out the dregs as you'd like to do.

Yep.

This way we could see the BEST EVER geekquestions - and they would get a lot more answers.

We can do this for reviews, geeklists, session reports, images and lord knows what else. It surely can't be much coding effort to add this for geekquestions.

This would turn a pretty much useless area of BGG into a fascinating database.

Just putting a marker in here, should I need it...

996893 - Q: What should I be for Halloween? Think I could pull off Buddy Holly?
A: that would be awesome.

997270 - Q: Chose one : [A duck follows you for the rest of your days] or [you have feathers coming out of your mouth whenever you laugh]
A: the duck would be awesome, except for the poop

998079 - Q: You have an answer for everything don't you?
A: Not yet but I am trying. Clark does though.

998241 - Q: Do your favorite boardgames contain a good mixture of luck, teamwork, and strategy?
A: Yes.

999021 - Q: If you had to get into a car accident/wreck, would you rather it be with someone you know and are acquainted with or with a stranger? Why would you prefer this? No wimping out by saying you would rather not get into an accident/wreck!
A: a stranger, if I have to get in a wreck, I don't want to drag someone I know into it

999420 - Q: Excluding weddings, births (including your own), graduations, meeting your SO, and other standard hallmark events, what was the greatest day of your life?
A: The day I first met my girlfriend-to-be. July 21, 1992 (a little over 17 years ago).

999461 - Q: Which is less popular: GeekQuestions or GeekCoins?
A: I've never heard of either one.

999512 - Are we stuck in a Kakistocracy? Please elaborate.
A: I don't think that's the right name for rule by the military.

999580 - Q: How encrypted are YOUR cookies?
A: 3.587

999634 - Q: Which is less popular: GeekQuestions or GeekCoins?
A: Guilds.

Yeah, dude. To paraphrase Groucho, I would never belong to an organization whose standards were so low as to allow me as a member. Our urine soaked back-alley is for Groucho's only.
