I was looking at my current amount of received thumbs (875) and got to wondering what the answers were to the following questions:

1) Is there a reason for keeping track of thumbs?
2) Does it just show my relevance to the site?
3) Or perhaps is there a deeper goal (microbadges)?
4) Even if there isn't, why do I feel a constant need to accumulate more?
5) Did you thumb this thread?
6) If you didn't, will you thumb this thread?
7) If not, why are you hoarding the thumb love?

Really though, I'm just wondering...is there a deeper meaning here. I checked the Wiki page and came up empty handed really, leading me to believe that I've experienced all that is "thumbs".

Am I missing something?

1. Yes, to show who has more thumbs than others. Also, you get a mirobadge for getting 10,000 of them (see the golden meeple off to the left)

2. No. In chit chat, you could have made that many thumbs in about a week.

3. See #1

4. Cause we are gamers and humans, and we like to accumulate stuff, even if it's meaningless.

5. Yup

6. See #5

7. See #5

No, you are not missing much.
Hope these answers help

1. Yes, so you know how many you have got.
2. Yes. Right now, you are exactly 875 relevant.
3. Yes. The elusive Golden Meeple microbadge (not so elusive if you post a lot in Chit Chat)
4. Because you are a thumb whore
5. No.
6. Oh, alright then.
7. Hey, I'm not hoarding. I just made you 1 more relevant.

Amazingly, I don't think I have a single thumb from the chit chat section!

As a matter of fact, now looking at it the majority come from a combination of my geeklist of reviews that I posted.

...maybe I should try taking the easy way out.

1) Is there a reason for keeping track of thumbs?
For separate threads, yes. I value the thumbs I get for reviews. For games with many reviews, a good thumb count means a lot of people had good use of the review or thought it was well written, which is nice.

2) Does it just show my relevance to the site?
In a way, it shows how much your stuff is read and appreciated. That doesn't mean it's relevant, as a lot of thumbs come from chit chat.

3) Or perhaps is there a deeper goal (microbadges)?
As I don't post in Chit chat (except very occasionally) my deeper goal is to get a golden meeple. Won't happen in another 3 years.

4) Even if there isn't, why do I feel a constant need to accumulate more?
Because you're human and you like the appreciation of others.

5) Did you thumb this thread?
No.

6) If you didn't, will you thumb this thread?
No.

7) If not, why are you hoarding the thumb love?
I thumb posts that I find were informative of very worth while reading. This one wasn't.

Thumbs are the poor man's . At least, that's how I use them.

Oh, to be able to the clever reply, the thoughtful review, the honest attempt at, um, stuff, but alas, my precious must be used for the next for games lottery or for lottery or more microbadges (if I can stop wasting it doing the previous two), so until I earn enough to spread it around, to you sir, I say... thumbsup

I find thumbs useful in individual threads. Generally speaking if a thread/review/photo has a lot of thumbs, there's something worthwhile in there. As for an individual I don't think it means much other than that they have been around and contributing for a while. I consider my golden meeple a testament to my ability to make smartass comments more than anything.

1) Is there a reason for keeping track of thumbs?
It depends on personal preferences. I keep track of my thumbs to see which of my contributions were valued the most by Geeks of this website. Also some microbadges (golden image uploader, golden file uploader, golder reviewer) are based on minimum thumb requirement (which I fail to meet all the time).
2) Does it just show my relevance to the site?
I would say that yes... But only when you keep track of who thumbed you, and you recognize that person's screen name. With some people I discussed some topics and since then I recognize them. I value their thumbs. I'm not going to list them, I don't even know they recognize and remember my screen name.
One disturbing feature of thumbs, that sometimes makes those worthless, is that if you hit the popular topic you get a lot of thumbs. For example - you can get vast amount of thumbs by uploading image for Space Hulk, but you won't get much for a review of Monopoly or pictures for some unknown print and play game. There is also this chit-chat thing mentioned before.
3) Or perhaps is there a deeper goal (microbadges)?
You get microbadge for 10,000 thumbs. It's rather long-term perspective. I don't think people think about microbadges while collecting thumbs.
4) Even if there isn't, why do I feel a constant need to accumulate more?
Feeling of being unique, important and appreciated? Sign that somebody found your comment or thread useful? Fact that you made somebody's day better with funny remark? It's always about clapping hands and saying "this guy done a good job"... and everyone wants to know one is doing well.
5) Did you thumb this thread?
No.
6) If you didn't, will you thumb this thread?
No. At least not now. I'm not quite certain.
7) If not, why are you hoarding the thumb love?
I don't understand the question. I guess my English is not good enough, and at the moment I'm to lazy to check the dictionary. I think the answer is "no" though...

Well, yes - the golden meeple microbadge is awarded for 10,000 thumbs.

Because generally I use thumbs as a way to return to information that interests me (unfortunately that's broken right now, but I do hope to see it return soon). This isn't a thread I will want to read again, therefore - no thumb.

JC, another excellent response! I have to ask, and believe me when I tell you I'm not fishing for the golden clue to receive one myself, but do you think that there is a possibility that you might one day "thumb" a post on this site? Is there a remote chance that a BGG post might someday provide you reason enough to click on the thumbsup ? Just curious, in the way that people look up at the stars at night and wonder what might be happening on another planet circling a star light years from here.

When are you coming over to Chit Chat, Ryan? We don't bite, I promise! We are a little crazy. Well, a lot crazy. But we have a good time. And we don't hoard thumbs. In fact, if you really want thumbs in Chit Chat, all you've got to do is ask!

We'll be waiting for you when you're ready.

But when EgorjLileli asks for your soul, you must tell her you traded it for a copy of Roads & Boats, or Space Hulk, or Stronghold, or whatever it seems she'll believe. Otherwise, she'll eat it.

I am not kidding.

I couldn't tell you how many thumbs I have because the total is mostly irrelevant.

Thumbs do, however, seem to fulfill the human desire for validation. I sometimes pay attention to them when I'm debating an issue, to see if anyone else agrees with me.

No. You can show your relevance to this site without thumbs, or fingers. Most of us aren't prejudiced (except the ATers)

Yes. Some system generated microbadges require thumbs.

Away in Texas, buried in the heat and the humidity, there are some computers. In some of those computers are hard drives, and in those hard drives are spinning platters of glass or non-ferrous metal. The platters of those drives are coated with a minuscule layer of brown or black magnetic material, and they whir at great speed, spinning many thousands of times a second under a drive-head occasionally hovering not very many atoms above.

The purpose and function of thumbs is to alter the magnetic orientation of a few microscopic patches of that spinning, whirring, hovered-upon material. That's all.

I'll stop pandering after thumbs when I hit 10k. Just 70 more. And yes, I fear, a lot is due to wasting time in Chit Chat. But, I'm glad to say, there seems to be some appreciation from other users for the files I've uploaded (49, tough room), the few games I've reviewed or queried and the contests I've run (795), the things I've added on geeklists (1420) and other tidbits and bon mots over my many months.
