My 13yo son is doing a History Fair project on photography, specifically the impact that photography has had on history. As part of his research, he has to interview people involved in the business. He's sent cold e-mails to a number of people asking their views on the topic. To his delight, he's received helpful responses from people like...

A Yale University history professor
Two Pulitzer-winning photographers
The former Managing Editor of Time and co-founder of People magazine

Those are just the ones I can remember. He's received responses from many others, all very helpful. My wife commented that twenty years ago, you'd have to work hard just to contact people like this by phone or letter. We were also really pleased that these experts were so eager to help and offer their advice.

Wow! That's really cool! Your son gets all the cool projects for school. We never got to do any cool projects like that.

When I created my crappy little website in 1995, I included a paean to John Byrne. A few months later, I got an email from John Byrne. Very short, saying thanks. But he wrote to me!!! I luv the internets.

When I was a kid Georgia O'Keeffe would allow our art class to visit her on her ranch a few times a year. She really bolstered the arts, and was a nice old lady.

That was pretty cool.

It's sad to see schools more interested in the football program over the art programs.

Yeah, she was pretty old and almost entirely blind by that time, but even at the age of 90 something, she still took the time to teach us painting techniques. I remember doing a tempera painting of a sports car on a visit to the ranch, which my mom still keeps on the wall.

Re: Famous people are actually pretty cool
Having lived in NYC, and worked at all three of the big networks, I've run into my fair share of celebrities. I also made a point not to bug someone just because they were famous. I would only approach someone I truly admired (and never in an inappropriate setting like a resteraunt).

Granted, the people I liked aren't the ones who would be surrounded by adoring fans, but truly nice folks I've had the pleasure to speak with include.

Soupy Sales
He was a mid-day host on WNBC-AM when I was a page. His producer encouraged me to drop by his office to say hello.

Bob Elliott (from Bob & Ray. And if you don't know who that is, I weep for you. Two of the funniest people ever to grace the airwaves.) I actually worked with him during a stint with Garrison Keillor's brief NYC radio show)

Tom Bodett
Not from my NYC days, but more recently when my local NPR station hosted a taping of Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. I'd been a fan of Tom's writing for many years, and was thrilled he would be on the panel.

I thought it was very cool that he was one of the narrators on the recent The National Parks: America's Best Idea.

Here's a story I posted about Billy Joel.

I've hung out with a number of famous folks... mostly artists and musicians. I never had an experience that was "uncool".

Re: Famous people are actually pretty cool - UPDATE!
When I was in high school, I was the editor of our HS paper in my senior year. Our English teacher was also an events coordinator on the side and he brought Leo Kottke into town and set up an interview for me. I spent one Easter Sunday at his show and then spent 2 hours interviewing him backstage. He was extremely nice, made me laugh and told me some good stories. It's a shame that none of my friends have heard of him because I can't impress anyone with that story. But I won't forget how nice he was and how he just let me hang out with him.

I've also met Henry Rollins twice and he was a gem both times.

Re: Famous people are actually pretty cool - UPDATE!
Well I've met Jolly Blackburn several times (creator/writer of Knights of the Dinner Table comic book) and he's a fantastically cool and kind person. Just a great gamer altogether.

I also attended Chicago Comic-Con in 2005 and got to meet Harmony (Mercedes McNabb) from the Buffy the Vampire Slayer show. It was an odd day because I was on crutches from a soccer injury and we'd just decided NOT to wait in the insanely long line to meet the actor who played Lorne (the nightclub-owning demon from Angel) and just stumbled onto a booth that had Mercedes in it. It was cheaper to meet her than him and for my money, she was every bit as important to her series as Lorne was in his...plus, well, let's be honest, she's incredibly gorgeous. In person, she was far prettier than in the show and she was super friendly. I didn't know what to expect when sidling up to her for a picture so I just planned to keep my hands to myself - didn't want to look like some grabby geek but she put her hand on my shoulder and insisted I put my arm around her waist so it'd be a cooler picture. Wow! I pretty much mentally fainted at that point, so I don't recall much else. LOL My fiance was extremely gracious about the whole thing.

Here's the documentary my son will be submitting for History Day state finals in May (a bit tweaked from the original in December).

For those who have been following my son's efforts: The state history fair was held this weekend in Austin. My son's entry (see above) did not finish in the top two (which go on to nationals), so his adventure ends there. Thanks for all your great comments and interest!
