I'm reading through the Space Hulk rule book for a second time while watching the Steelers game with my husband. The thought occurred to me that I wasn't at all sure about the time available on the fluent sand timer provided with the game. I used a Robic Multi-Mode Chronograph digital timer we have for our son's swimming events and proceeded to test for an average.

End (up) A:
2'50"823
2'50"118
2'50"634

End (up) B:
2'43"907
2'44"593
2'44"263

Has anyone else found this kind of discrepancy in their timers? Not that it really matters... just curious.

Booyah!

Yeah, this has been mentioned in quite a few threads. The way the sand clumps and forms will cause small variances. I like the fact you are never 100% sure how much time you are getting, but for those who don't like it, there's always the stopwatch option.

I guess I am just not as strategic as everyone else, as I have not had to worry about the time ending. I am always done before the timer is... Maybe I should try playing the second mission now

*edit* Yes, my sand timer is all over the place as far as consistency goes (I'm not about to open my 4 other boxes to try those ones out). I use my daughters sand timer that the dentist gave her... 2 minutes on the dot everytime. We use it instead.

You should try it at relativistic speeds (06xc and above). The time dilation will give you the necessary time bonus :)

Mine is 2:51 and 3:05

I have to admit I was disappointed at first, so much so that I marked the bottom of both ends so I could see the time.

But I figure that mine is so close that I play it that way.

Now my son plays with a digital stopwatch -- and we've sat by the computer to use the digital download timer in the files section here. Now THAT's cool.

I kinda like using the sand timer. The varied difference in seconds really adds in more tension to the marine player. In any case, the timer will prompt the marine players to move fast so in my playgroup, we usually finish our moves way ahead of time.

Mine hits 2:59 one way, 2:50 the other, pretty consistently. No complaints here.

I´ve done it the other way, I gave mine to my sons for teeth brushing and my Marines are done when they are done, works fine for me

You can still use the timer for cooking your eggs.

The timer in my original box had 2'05" surprise

And the second I bought sperately has 3'07", which is okay I think. But just about two minutes is a joke. Who filled these things? Genestealers?

We probably won't use the timer at all. So far we're getting by with the understanding that the Space Marines time limit is roughly 3 minutes... to avoid analysis-paralysis.

I hate sand timers because someone has to stare at the thing during game play and announce to everyone when the time runs out.

I use the digital timer shown below.

http://tinyurl.com/yzas465

Just set it for 3 minutes, press start, then it lights up during the last 60 seconds with green, yellow and finally red lights before beeping! If only it would tick faster as the clock winds down, and then play an explosion sound. A guy can dream.

Sand timers are almost never very precise or accurate. And as you've seen, many have differant times depending on which end you start up. There's a game called Space Dealer which comes with 8 sandtimers, and that game was infamous amongst its owners for having wildly varying sand timers (in that game it could give an unfair advantage to someone).

Basically, if you are ok with the sandtimer and how much time it gives, use it. Otherwise, use a countdown timer or stopwatch or eggtimer, etc.

I'm pretty sure nearly all games that have sand timers are like this, because in most games its not all that important if you get a few seconds more or less.

Kinda like resistors in electrical components. The tolerance in those can be up to 20% or so.
