at first I wasn't sure what I was looking at, then I realized that the close up in the second picture is an LCD screen (and confirmed in the link). But not touch screen, so it just shows pictures, maybe video.

So I'm still not sure what I'm looking at...

It does say they are touch screens.

They must be touchscreen PCs built in (they are running win xp in the pics).
That would at least go someway to explaining the price.

For 15k surely you could just get a MS Surface table, that would handily double as, well, an actual table as well?

Well, I'd feel lacking in style, at least.

the Surface should be a great thing for hybrid video/board games.... anyone actually seen one?

Sometimes I wonder about you gamers...it's like asking "Why do I need this over designed Ferrari F40, when my Ford Taurus works just fine". It's just an over the top luxury item, you don't actually "need" it. It's just for cool factor alone.

Im not saying i don't need it I am saying some of the other tables look like something i "need" first.

Having a MS Surface table and a coder with some time would make it possible to play 99% of boardgames using just a handful of components (cubes / chits/ etc.) and the touch sensitive surface.

Yeah, the library at my university has two of them. Most of the time when I walk by someone's playing chess on them. I've also seen some circular multi-player Tetris-like game being played. They have the video being mirrored to a big screen on the wall nearby so you don't have to peek over peoples shoulders to see what's going on.

They would be really nice for boardgame emulation, but they aren't huge. Smallish coffee table sized, and there's a large black space around the edge. If I could get my hands on one for a while, VASSAL would be the first thing on there.

Remember the movie "Never Say Never Again," with Sean Connery coming back as James Bond? This table might be cool for that Global Domination game they played.

Or it could be a nice prop as a Minbari table for a Babylon 5 setting.

But I think it's rather ugly and impractical. Another drain of electricity.

Unfair comparison. You can't exactly head out to some party, roll up in your gaming table, and use it as a chick-magnet.

A super-snazzy table is no cure for a mid-life crisis. Even one as garish as this one is.
